I live in a small city of about 100k people as well. Let me see, the mayor is a Freemason, as is the chief of police that he brought in. After the stunning success they had building a new convention center for 170 million, which they said would generate profit in 5 years, they found out differently. It is such a dismal failure that a major hotel chain will not even build a hotel for all that convention business. In light of that monumental success, they decided we needed to build a baseball stadium at taxpayer expense. The idea began at 8 million and rose to 40 million long before any construction was set to start. Their theory was that a new stadium would draw scads of fans to games. They failed to mention that they have had 3 minor league outfits that have failed and moved elsewhere. Fortunately, we got a referendum vote to stop the criminals. The city is in 300 million debt with municipal bonds.

Every local politician that is in the county system or city government, both parties, can be found at the Freemason meeting any time there is an event. We had one running as a republican for county commissioner, who had made his living from government contracts as an environmental engineer. At one of the local rallies, where all the candidates were gathered to tell lies, it was open for questions. I asked about whether he would withdraw from bidding on county contracts. He stood up to tell me all about how he had gone to an ethics course, which was government sponsored. After some additional BS he asked if he had answered my question adequately. I said Sure, You just told me you learned your ethics from the government. Anyone deluded enough to think that small town equals small corruption is off the reservation. All it means is that there are less people who can screw up and let the truth out. That politician I mentioned was also a Freemason, as was his Baptist pastor.
