Stepping into a new "branch," we encounter a map that is both old and new. Once known as Limgrave, it is now a land of shadows, tinged with an unsettling hue influenced by the Erdtree, which emanates an energy far from positive. The monster scaling mechanics are merciless, and the bosses are masterfully designed and highly unpredictable. Following in the footsteps of Miquella, the journey unfolds across a relatively small map, yet brimming with layers upon layers of FromSoftware's intricate design.

Everything is executed to near perfection. However, a few elements prevent this expansion from surpassing the side content of previous FromSoftware titles and earning the moniker of "Greatest Expansion Ever." These include the super boss known as Prime Radahn (akin to a community-created boss mod), the erratic performance of the latest update, and the slightly hollow feeling after unraveling Miquella's story and motives.

I give this expansion an 8/10. In my heart, it stands as the winner of "Best Ongoing Game 2024" and "Best Expansion of the Year 2024."

Ori and the Will of the Wisps stands as a masterful testament to the brilliance of 2D platformers, intertwining breathtaking visuals, emotionally resonant storytelling, and an enchanting musical score to create an immersive gaming experience. Developed by Moon Studios, this sequel not only lives up to its predecessor but surpasses it in every aspect.

One of the game's standout features is its awe-inspiring artistry. The meticulously crafted environments, characterized by vibrant colors and intricate details, elevate the game to a visual masterpiece. Each frame is a work of art, bringing the mystical world of Ori to life with a sense of wonder and magic. The level design is equally commendable, seamlessly blending beauty with functionality to deliver a platforming experience that is as challenging as it is visually captivating.

The emotional depth embedded in the narrative adds another layer of richness to the game. The poignant story of Ori's journey, filled with moments of sorrow, hope, and friendship, resonates long after the credits roll. The nuanced character development and the connection forged with the spirit companions, the Wisps, evoke a genuine emotional investment from the player.

A standout aspect of Ori and the Will of the Wisps is its evocative musical score. Composed by Gareth Coker, the soundtrack complements the game's emotional beats and atmospheric nuances flawlessly. The music serves as a guiding force, intensifying the impact of key moments and creating a deeply immersive experience. The synergy between visuals, narrative, and music is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship behind the game.

The challenging platforming elements, coupled with demanding boss battles, contribute to the game's overall excellence. The decision not to grind for skill upgrades adds an extra layer of difficulty, enhancing the sense of accomplishment when overcoming obstacles and defeating formidable foes. The finely tuned balance between difficulty and reward keeps players engaged and invested in Ori's journey.

While some may find the game's level of difficulty daunting, it ultimately adds to the sense of achievement when conquering each section. The commitment to a challenging platforming experience sets "Ori and the Will of the Wisps" apart in a genre that often relies on nostalgia rather than innovation.

In conclusion, Ori and the Will of the Wisps stands as a testament to the potential of 2D platformers in the modern gaming landscape. With its mesmerizing art, emotionally charged narrative, and challenging gameplay, Moon Studios has created a masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of the genre. It's not just a game; it's an emotional journey that captivates players from start to finish, solidifying its place as one of the finest examples of gaming artistry in recent years.

It has been a while since I felt such excitement in anticipation of a video game, and when it was finally released, oh my Lord, the time spent waiting for the official version was truly worth it. From the chilling storytelling, hauntingly captivating music, the exhilaration of rolling the dice and waiting for a favorable outcome to enhance the unfolding narrative, spending 4 to 5 hours a day from the very first day of the game's release until now, I still haven't grown tired of it. Truly worth the money and the effort invested in waiting - it remains the Game of the Year in my heart, no matter who the victor of this year might be!
