This is a really good versatile VR player but it does have its issues and limitations, that said this should be your first choice for a free VR app.

Lets start with the good :
- Variety of 3D scenes, and supports all types of content (360, 180, Flat but 3D, etc)
- Local file browsing and network browsing gives easy access to your own custom content.
- External codec pack support so this will play nearly all formats and even if the app never gets updated your codec support will keep expanding.
- Free
- Panic mode for those that need it.
- API for website integration, although its barely used its a neat idea to have a more universal player.

That said, everything I love about it comes with a downside:
- Scene type detection is bad so it will usually play content as widescreen 2D content, this is easily solved in the interface with 3 clicks. But the advertised "It just works" is not met.
- Nothing plays by default on my codec pack setup, and I mean literally nothing. Every single format including basic ones such as MP4 refuses to play on the Auto mode. This might be because I disable some codec support to force apps to use Directshow but this NEEDS a proper automatic fallback in the Auto mode. Don't just tell me the file isn't supported and ask me to install the codec pack I already had, automatically try the other mode. Luckily this CAN be easily fixed in the settings by forcing Directshow.
- The 3D spaces are nice but one obvious one is missing, where is the cinema? Best remedy I had for it was the void and just imagining the theater is dark.
- If your VR setup crashes it now won't detect your controllers anymore since it instantly overwrites this with the wrong control mode. I had to delete the config files to fix it.
- You keep spawning the menu's and movie where I am looking at the time which usually isn't center, so I keep having to recenter the screen.

So this app has the potential to be a 10/10 VR player but its not quite there. As is its still the best free one I tried but due to the issues it needs a manual for new users. So hopefully they read my feedback and fix it but if not here's your go to guide to start loving this program.

1. Right bottom on the player is the 3D box button, most 3D content needs SBS and the corresponding flat, 180 or 360 mode.
2. If you go the codec pack route go to the settings and change the player backend from Auto to Directshow, this will vastly improve your codec support.
(3. 3D content won't be 3D while the player interface is up, this is not a bad thing since it means the UI will work correctly but don't assume it doesn't work before you close the buttons)

If you like Doom, you are going to like this.
If you like Doom but hated Eternal? You are going to really like this.
If you like Doom, but especially modded source port experiences? You are going to love this!

It has the pace, it has the smooth mouse gameplay, it has the fun gameplay, it has the soundtrack and it has a good level editor.
For the $25 asked its a must buy for every fan of Doom style gameplay if you don't mind that it is a work in progress game with not all content being finished or final (Despite what is there being nicely polished). For other people who like shooters but aren't specifically nostalgic or thrilled about old school gameplay it can still be fun, but in that case buy it on sale.

Posting this as a hopefully tempoary buyers beware warning that this book is currently broken on some systems.

If you run Linux do not buy this as it has severe rendering issues. But unfortunately for me i also have this on Windows 10 with an AMD Vega 64.

So if you have an AMD GPU or run Linux be aware these configurations are currently broken. I will try it again once an update arrives and either change this review or refund depending on if its fixed.

After playing the demo stanley decided to immediately buy the game using his favorite payment method.
He fired it up and had a huge smile on his face and enjoyed the great writing of the intelligent and charming narrator.

Refunded Doom Eternal so i have to wait until that goes trough before i can rebuy this one.
I only played a bit of it, but this game was really great. I especially loved the level design of the second level.
The two cons of this game for me are the mouse aim not having a free aim option and the music not fitting fast paced combat. One can be fixed trough source ports although they currently don't support the wad.

I also checked out Brutal Doom 64, this has even nicer atmospheres, allows for music replacements and has free aim. But i noticed important differences in the levels making it less fun to play than the original version you get with this. (Specially there is an item pickup on the second level that causes all the doors to open with pinkies, with barrels in the middle. I loved this as it put me on my toe's but did not feel unfair. In the free remakes this doesn't happen and you get the powerup free).

So is it worth the money? I'd say so. Is Doom 64 EX better in terms of features? I'd say so, but that one does require a wad and the N64 rom. Using my tool availible at henk.tech/doom64 you can patch the wad from this release to be compatible with Doom 64 EX. Including the new levels.

Perhaps i just wasn't in the mood for it, but i was just not having fun with the game at all.
And thats odd because i love older FPS games.

What ruined it for me?
The balance, especially early on just does not feel fair.
I am in an arena or a hallway, with things attacking me from all sides with nothing but 16 shotgun bullets and a machine gun. I need to spray half my ammo on the aragnatrons turret for it to finally go down after i already mowed down everything else often leaving me without ammo before these fights. And the whole "Surprice here is a big demon you are not prepared for" design really gets old on me along with the bullet spungy nature of the enemies.

Classical FPS is all about optimizing targets, that this game does and neither is there ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like aimdown sight. So it has all the elements i love in a game. But what it gets completely wrong is the way your allowed to engage in the fights. I don't want to constantly have to pay attention to every type of ammo source, i want to be able to pay my attention to the enemies. I don't want to be ambushed by something i needed a gun for that i just was forced to use on everything else only to realise my chainsaw has not recharged yet.

If you don't have issues with low ammo counts and like the concept of being forced to all the weapons all the time, forced to use melee kills and the correct type of kills, don't mind learning what a level will throw at you i am sure you will have a lot of fun in the game. But if you like me enjoy the Half-Life / Doom style gameplay where you have an arsenal of weapons at your disposal, almost all of which you can use but can prioretize different weapons on different enemies and constantly quickly adapt to the changes in the fight you will end up frustrated. Because even on easy difficulties this will punish you for getting enthousiastic about killing stuff.

Very dissapointed with the PC port in the current state.
- Servers
Contains a hybrid of dedicated and P2P servers, but no proper dedicated community servers for the custom content and no server browsers. Make sure to enable the relay in the mutiplayer options before playing on P2P servers.
- Options
The options are very basic, i can kinda trick it by enabling VSync and setting the game to unlimited framerate but there is no option to lock the game to anything else than 60fps. Its either 60fps or unlimited. It also lacks the option to have multiple binds for a single command.
- Audio & Graphical fidelity
The audio is currently very lackluster, the graphics seem like a 10 year old game which is fine since it essentially is but i did expect more from a remaster. Expect the enhanced content to look like your buying a 10 year old game, which makes me wonder what the original looked like (And yes i did put it on Enhanced in the options).
- Forced login for singleplayer content
Don't want to use a microsoft account? Don't buy the game, its not always online but guest accounts like on older GFWL titles are not supported.
- Weird binds that seem alien to me as a PC gamer
Why is weapon swap 1 and not mouse wheel? I can't correct this either because of the limited binding options.

Currently i am considering a refund but ill be waiting to see what the developers are planning to do in the coming weeks. I had a lot of fun playing Halo 2 on xbox when i was younger, but i do want to see the port improved before keeping this.

They screwed up the details, but what is left is a beautiful reimagining of the original Half-Life game mostly true to its part. Half-Life 1 was a master piece and in Black Mesa this continues. If you want the original experience buy Half-Life 1, but if you want Half-Life brought to a modern age this is a must buy especially since the weaker part is remade from scratch making it fresh even for hardened fans. On a Rail has been cut down, but if you like me rather have the original experience look for On a Rail uncut on the workshop before you play a campaign and it will be given back to you.

I hate it when you get a gigantic fire of outrage upon outrage.
Please just take the game on its merrit, if you buy this game you get a game running on the EDuke32 engine made by people who are passionate about the old build style games. Its a fun game even though i haven't had to much chance to play it yet. Runs as well on a toaster as it does on a 1080 which is as good as it is bad since the game can drop slightly in places.

What is the outrage about? A far left forum bullied the devs for their opinion and now they plan to rectify it making it another studio to give in to poltiical bullying and compromising by making a developer go to political propeganda and censoring a few items in the game. So by doing that they now upset both sites. In my own opinion it would be better if they just dare to stand behind their opinion rather than pandor to the mob. I hope they learn from this for their future titles but it is by no means a reason not to buy this great game.

So dev's, you didn't have to do that dono, and it was probably better if you didn't try to respond to the critism as your personal opinions did not reflect the game, the game however is great especially for the price. So this gets a thumbs up from me.

I might edit this review at some point if i had more chance to play it and the drama blows over.

Ymir is a one man passion project that i discovered after imagining my ideal strategy game.
Never have i seen a game that comes close to that idea of having a strategy game that is a city builder first that also allows for global politics and conflicts.

The game has in depth economical emulation of your city and you have no direct influence over many aspects of your city like population growth or the prices. Just like the real governament doesn't have any direct control over this. Your choices will directly influence the natural economy.

It also has a 4X style strategy which reminded me of the old browser games where everyone has there own towns and you can trade and send troops to other towns to take them over and conquer them. Form alliances, etc. Except this time its backed by the actual in depth gameplay of managing these cities rather then ads and microtransactions.

The downsides of the game mostly lie in the engine its build in. Game Maker isn't exactly ideal for a game like this and the fact Thibaud pulled it off is amazing on its own. But it does mean especially in early access your going to be getting some crashes, and are going to witness quirks like a new server window launching when you want to play the solo mode.

The game does feature the ability to play alone, but this is equal to playing on an empty server. You will get the very enjoyable city management modes, you will get barbarian tribes and the challenges these things bring. But you do not have player emulation AI so that aspect of the game can only be experienced with other players.

For those wondering, the game officially does not have central servers. The developer does host them but the idea is that the community can host these themselves with the settings that they like. This means that as a player you get a complete copy of the server technology that powers the 100 player servers. And it will always be possible to host your own, including servers for LAN events. There is no lan server browser in the game as of yet but you can join LAN IP's from taking them in.

So if your in the market for a city builder with conquer aspects and politics beyond that where you can experiment with international politics and economic models give this game a try!
