If you like action games, regardless of RPGs or not, I definitely say look into this collection. I can think of few games as satisfying to clear hordes of enemies in than Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. My biggest advice is keep an eye on your abilities and make sure to equip a loadout that works for your play style. Half the fun of the series is playing around with these.

You may have heard the story is confusing. It is. This didn’t hinder my enjoyment as a kid and I didn’t fully research the entire story and learn every bit of minutiae until literally this year. I feel a greater sense of appreciation for the story for sure now, but considering some of the meatiest lore of the series is locked behind now defunct mobile games, and the story presented in the main games is fun enough even if you can’t make complete sense of it, I’d say genuinely don’t worry about it unless you really want to.

Lastly, if the Disney turns you off, I am not a huge Disney guy myself. I enjoy a few films here and there but it’s not my favorite company by any means. The overarching story of the series has very little to do with the Disney characters and each Disney franchise is treated sort of as a dungeon or lite hub world here or there. The main development of the story is told almost completely devoid of anything Disney and the original characters are far and away the reason you will keep coming back to this series. I wouldn’t sweat it much. If you are a bigger Disney fan than me, you might actually get even more enjoyment out of the series.

All in all, great games, great ports. Plays fantastic on Steam Deck as well.
