Rationality without compassion and this “survival of the fittest” or “live and let die” mentality that you’re promoting has led to some pretty dark places in history. Social Darwinism, Eugenics, and unchecked capitalism are some extreme examples but they demonstrate the danger of following these ideas to their logical conclusion.

I studied biology and the ironic thing is that social Darwinism is a bit off. Evolutionary psychology suggest that our ability cooperate and help each other have us an evolutionary advantage over apex predators that tend to be focused on intraspecies competition. Being on the top of the food chain is nice and all, but apex predators lead violent lives filled within conflicts over territory and status. So one could argue that compassion and the ability to help each other are what helped to make humans successful.

I’m not going to accept this inequality as a fact of life. If enough people can take action to help out overlooked VTubers then we might be able to make a difference. It won’t fix everything, but not trying and silently approving of an unfair system helps inequality grow. The reason why I joined Reddit was to promote my favorite VTubers on this subreddit and that’s why I’ll keep doing it even if I only get a few upvotes for my posts but I get dozens of downvotes for voicing my opinion.

And there is a cost. People only have so much time that they can devote to watching videos. I’m sure that people don’t only watch one channel, but the surge of people who discovered Hololive are dedicating the vast majority of their subscriptions and views to other Hololive members and are not branching out to other VTubers. Kizuna AI is still the most subscribed VTuber but she paved the way for those who followed and left room for others to succeed. Hololive is choking competition. Again I’m not blaming or pointing any fingers at any specific members but there is a systemic issue here and it is a big problem.
