One of the best WW2 shooters I have played to date.

Hell Let Loose is the perfect blend of realism and arcade. When you're first thrown into the battlefield you're given a wide selection of classes to choose from. It takes a moment or two to learn the different benefits to each class but you soon realise that they all compliment one another. The squad system is done to perfection and when you get a group of chaps who are willing to communicate it's such a good bit of fun! The explosions are funny to watch with bodies flying everywhere too.

Overall a really solid game already and with more updates to come this is 100% worth a buy at this stage

UPDATE: I feel it is appropriate to disclaim that I now work for AGS and actively work on Holdfast. This was not the case at the time of this review however.

NOTE: I received the game for free a couple years ago and since then I have played a small part in the development of the game through creating official maps and producing trailers for the game’s updates working as a freelancer. However, I have always actively played the game as a normal player and my experience has been no different than anyone else in that regard.

Simply put, Holdfast: Nations at War is a fun and welcome change in the historical title genre that doesn't take itself too seriously. Often historical games fall into the trap of ensuring historical accuracy topples all. This is not the case in Holdfast. While Holdfast does indeed aim to have historical accuracy, it doesn’t do it at the sacrifice of gameplay mechanics and fun. Because of this, what you get is a new Napoleonic era experience you won’t find elsewhere.

Pros:

- Fun public servers with active players almost at all times (you will always find people to play with)
- Friendly and active development team
- A regiment community that hosts events for those who desire a more roleplay focused gameplay experience
- Mechanics that are easy to learn but hard to master (as all good games should be)
- Wide range of classes to play as, each with their own unique skills and abilities
- Proximity voice chat, nothing is funnier than hearing a chap roleplaying as a disgruntled British officer trying to control 150+ players
- 150+ Player servers! (Some private events even have 200 player servers)
- Coastal siege gamemode (DDay but in the Napoleonic Wars)
- Naval battles that always look and feel epic!
- Tightknit community that is friendly, welcoming and generally drama free
- Wide selection of maps to play
- Cavalry! (Because who doesn’t like horses?)
- Artillery system that requires teamwork
- Server customisation is rather extensive

Cons: (NOTE: A lot of these cons are being worked on)

- A selection of only 4 factions, more would be nice
- Mechanics such as the melee requires some refining (this doesn’t take much away from the game however)
- No public map creation tool currently (this is something that has been promised eventually though)
- Some classes are unbalanced (developers are actively trying to balance them however)

To conclude, for the price you really can’t go wrong. You’ll easily get hours of fun with this game, just don’t take it too seriously. 100% worth a buy.
