There are no space battles, instead this game excels at what it does: pushing your decision making skills to the edge for survival. In FTL you might be deciding now and then whether to buy more hull hitpoints, fuel or another crewmember, and that will keep you alive for another sector or so (hopefully). In Out There you'll have to decide whether another jump to a planet with metals instead (costing fuel) won't kill you because the next jump's random event suddenly drains your fuel so much and the planets there (and possibly that of the next two jumps) are completely impossible to recover from.

This may sound unnecessarily punishing, but at some point you can get the hang of it (it's just a tough pill to swallow if you thought you could build up some kind of comfort zone). After some failures I could see how there's really that need for optimizing every decision towards maximum survival possibilities, and for example forcing me to have to deal with my habit of loot hoarding. It took me a while to figure out that demolishing ship parts to rebuild them later can grant extra logistical options, and how to take the expense of such actions into account through those tough decisions you have to make. I still fail miserably at it, but that's just testament to how well this game is designed around the deep drive for survival.

I'd say, abstract thinkers and problem solvers alike may like this game very much, it's more of a puzzle from some points of view, but the theme is still there, very well integrated into the gameplay. If you are more into the action that FTL's space battles granted, I'm afraid you won't find it here. This game pushes you to the limits just as much, but to the sense of a more strategic view on things, rather than tactically. And you need it, to survive in space, you need to do everything to extend your potential lifespan because space is scary like that, and this game conveys that just perfect.
