I want to preface this review by saying that I believe this is the developers first game, and it's a small team of three people. With that in mind, it's not a bad game, but very generic. It's okay for the price point, but a replacement for The Movies this is not. There are an enormous amount of little details missing compared to The Movies that really affect the flavor of the game.
No radio announcer or mumble voicing, no character voicing at all.
Background music is free license songs and very quickly becomes repetitive and annoying. There is no difference between music played in 1920 and music played in the 2010s era. Research progress feels incredibly slow, I found myself hiring more researchers than any other employee type in the game. Other than camera work and post-production there is no feeling of advancing through the ages.
There is no personality to hired employees at all. Hiring and firing is just a numbers game rather than actually endearing yourself to the individuality of the directors/actors (because there is none.)
Things like vices, scandals, habits, rehab, plastic surgery, things that were present in The Movies are not present here and it creates a noticeable sense of emptiness.
There is a system in which you must rent properties to your employees based on their star level and I found it more tedious than enjoyable. All you do is click from a house on an overview screen, and either rent or terminate the employees tenancy in that location. It's a spreadsheet with flavor.
There is one costume per movie genre.
There are no prefabricated movie sets. There is a single default set that is available to you and everything else you must create yourself. All sets are a flat, single room. There is no way to landscape a movie set to create something that looks like a believable outdoor scenario. There are no sweeping set pieces as per The Movies. It all just feels generic and left me missing The Movies. Some parts of it felt a little lazy. Perhaps in time we'll see a spiritual successor to The Movies that fills the void of the original. But unfortunately this isn't it.

The menu UI update has and continuously remains by far the worst thing to ever happen to this game. It is completely unusable and remains broken after several updates. It is the most infuriating UI to navigate out of any game I have ever played in my entire life.
