I song along when I hear a lot of black/death metal bands. I learned a few tricks actually. For growls, use more of your stomach and not your throat to help make the sounds. For screeches and other high pitch sounds, eat a piece of cheese. It helps lubricate your throat or at least for me. If you are new to vocals, you may get a swore throat at first but you'll get used to it overtime.
