It's a wonderful game on so many levels. Survival remains challenging at all points during the game, even when you have become well established in the world. This is in stark contrast to other survival games where the early game is hard but the difficulty tapers off with time and thus one's ability to remain engaged with the world diminishes. Subsistence keeps you captivated from day 1 to the end game, a tremendous feat in the genre.

The pace of the game is decidedly slow, allowing the player to appreciate the small details, which once again places emphasis on surviving. Farming is not an automated process of plant, wait and collect like in Minecraft; in Subsistence, one has to craft a plant bed, place said bed in sunlight, plant the seeds, add water and fertiliser. Nighttime is extremely dark, as in real life and creates the perfect environment for one to enjoy the beautiful lighting from the Unreal Engine, as the light from a campfire or base light penetrates the surrounding darkness.

There are a few problems with the game that immediately come to mind, that being the overabundance of hostile wildlife, leading to the player having to crawl around to reach resources, a bit tedious to say the least. Furthermore, the mobs can't actually hit you if you keep running, they will never catch you and this takes some of the excitement out of the game.

Overall, this is an exceptional game, a true demonstration of indie creativity. The small-scope of Subsistence leads one to appreciate our daily comforts, as building something as simple as a baking tray is a serious endeavour in the game, while in the modern world, it is worth an hour of minimum wage labour.

Well done ColdGames!

VR user here. I found this game to be quite rough around the edges, especially in its poor quality UI. Although, with some tinkering, such as going into the config files and disabling the camera jerking around, the game is seriously detailed and simply a good bit of fun. The handling characteristics feels spartan, so do the graphics, but the evident ambition present in this game is totally unique.

To disable the camera moving around:
>Documents/forward development/city car driving steam/config/game.ini
>Go to HeadInertiaEnable0=true, HeadShiftEnable0=true, HeadNoiseEnable0=true
>Replace all the 'true' inputs with 'false' and thus the main issue with VR driving is resolved.
