Great early access game. Some performance issues, but it runs fine on my 1660. I have not been this hooked on a game since valheim came out and this game come with the added bonus of making me not want to play league of legends as well.

Alrighty folks I've never really felt the need to write a lengthy review before for a game, but here I go:

TLDR: Yea they didn't do a great job of advertising this game (its a ROUGE-LITE with ARPG and survival elements), but I feel like it has a lot more nuance than people are giving it credit for. Midgard has its downsides (combat could be more interesting early), but it can also be a lot of fun. This game is punishing, but has a lot to offer if you give it the time (it really takes longer than an hour or two to figure out how to play Midgard) and have friends to play it with.

Also as far as the server complaints go, I haven't noticed too many issues after they messed with their servers post launch.

First and foremost, this is a rouge-lite with ARPG and survival elements. You are constantly racing against the clock (whether it be approaching nightfall or a Jotun in the distance) which I thought was pretty cool honestly, it forces you to figure out your priorities to be as efficient as possible otherwise your run will end.

As far as progression goes, there are permanent improvements through the form of recipes and starting kits. The starting kits really change up how the game feels in the beginning by essentially giving you a shortcut (ranging from perks, tools, armor, weapons, ect.). From there you are collecting resources and souls so you can level up yourself, your equipment, and more importantly your town and its defenses (GET UR TINKERER TO LEVEL 3 ASAP).

Expect to lose a lot and die even more (this game can be pretty brutal at times, I have not made it past day 4 as of writing this), but take that as an opportunity to experiment. Try a different class or weapon. Figure out which starting kit you like the most. Explore the different biomes and figure out what you need to survive in them. The tutorial doesn't teach you everything. It could certainly teach you more, but I could see how that might take away from the game as well

The combat is good enough, but really feels lacking in the beginning. Once you start to get some different weapons and runes, I feel like the game opens up quite a bit. Quests are simple, but they are really just a means to an end (and to be fair, you don't really have time in game for a super complicated quest line). You want the XP and the loot.

As far as controls go, I didn't have any real complaints. I was fine with MnK (I could have made a few changes with key binds to make it feel better, but it was good enough), but eventually switched to a controller because I have carpal tunnel and using a controller seems to help.

Visually I think this game looks great. I love the style of the world and the designs for the mobs and Jotun. Lots of color with a cool cell shaded style. Haven't noticed any really performance issues, although you do sometimes get stuck on some of the weirder terrain. The use of player built ramps and bridges isn't my favorite thing in the game, but it allows you to build ways for you to get around faster and that isn't nothing.

As far as the micro transactions go, they are relatively harmless IMO. The cosmetics are pretty cheap ($1 to $2) when compared to other games and can be grinded for with the free saga pass that they do. Do they need micro transactions? Probably not, but this is a $20 game and the devs have already expressed the fact that they plan to provide a free live service (I'd consider it somewhat justified). A good portion of the store can only be bought with the in game currency as well

I am sure there is more that I could say, but I can't think of anything at the moment. Midgard might not be perfect, but it has a lot to offer (certainly more than you could experience in an hour or two)

This game is significantly more polished than most $60 games now a days. I have yet to notice any real game breaking bugs and have had a blast for all 20ish hours I have played. Just buy it already
