This game is out of some nihilistic nightmare. A constant tug-of-war of malicious violence across meaningless landscapes dotted with artillery craters and barbed wire. In a way, surviving the horror is as challenging as killing other players. You should expect to die... a lot. C'mon, it's WW1. The most brutal war ever (if WW2 hadn't stolen it's thunder.) Yet there is a sense of satisfaction in jumping from cover, slowly advancing in the face of almost certain death with your squad- and team-mates. Pushing on because at the very least you'll make a target for a shooter which may allow your friend to get a foothold in their lines. Diving into a crater as a split second later bullets whiz over your head.

Then, your attack fails! The enemy is counter-attacking and you must retreat and hold the trench line. On defense it's easier not to die if you hunker down tight, but without poking out to shoot some guys you risk being overrun. It's better to fight the opponent when they're in the no-man's land and you in the trenches; thus it is equally worse fighting the enemy when they "share" the trenches with you.

Your death is usually not glorious. Crawling forward up a ditch, finally making it to the enemy lines. Inch my way around a corner only to be shot in the face by a machine gunner who's been expecting me all along.

It's fun to play as an officer and call in mortar strikes or gas clouds. Having a scope is a huge plus for long range, but it's size makes the weapon a challenge to use effectively in close quarters. Sometimes it's fun to play a grenadier with 5 grenades and a shovel and charge at the enemy trenches and bombard them!

The controls are a bit wonky. Sometimes I swear I've reloaded my gun, but the animation never finished or something I did interrupted the reload. A German solider runs over the hill. I click on him and nothing happens. Without a bullet, he bayonets me.

You don't always know if going prone while moving you might give up at crouch instead. Thinking I'm going prone I "dive" into a crater, only to get wack-a-mole'd by a stray bullet with my head popping out like it shouldn't have been. Actually a dive animation would be really cool (*hint hint devs*)(maybe OP though).

It also sucks when not enough people are on and I can't find any meaningful games to join, so I'm writing this instead. You should buy and play because the game only gets better with more people (50 vs. 50?! hell yeah!) The squad and class system is really cool, and the career upgrade system works well and contributes to the variety of the gameplay. Finally, I'm extremely impressed with the realism of the game: bullet-drop, every weapon historically researched, traditional uniforms. The experience is both an FPS and a trench-war simulator, only adding to the unique challenge Verdun offers.
