Though fairly short at ~3 hours, it's an engaging point-and-click adventure game with an interesting time-travel mechanic.

Absolutely incredible from start to finish. Great story, atmosphere, characterization... If you're a fan of the films, you have to play this game.

It's a solid LEGO game, though at times it feels a bit too much like a tie-in for the movie. It definitely feels less inspired than some of the other LEGO games.

For what is otherwise a very slick and well-done mod, it’s unfortunate that the test chamber design is so lacking. This is not a knock against the “difficulty” of the chambers, but rather a knock against the way they are made difficult.

Portal, like every other video game, contains a number of player-aids that help make the game friendlier. Portals are self-centering. Excursion funnels will tunnel in items from their edges. Lost cubes are regenerated at their spawn points. These are small things that help make the game less frustrating and all-around more enjoyable, by accepting intent and forgiving imperfect execution.

Portal Stories: Mel frequently uses these player-aids as test chamber solutions. One test requires using successive excursion funnels placed close together to move a cube towards the player. A number of other tests require the player to request a new cube in order to tactically destroy the other. This is counter-intuitive, because these are never things you would do in the Portal universe. You are expected to work within the confines of the test, not exploit portions of the game’s design.

The mod also has a fondness for emancipation grids. It’s not unusual to see at least four or more in a single test chamber, some controllable by buttons, lasers, or switches. They force the player to “juggle” portals and cubes around them, often an exercise in tediousness itself. Many of the chambers would have been just as difficult without these emancipation grids, but with the added benefits of being much less tedious and much more fun.

Perhaps the worst quality of the test chamber design is that it tries to “trick” the player into finding solutions that do not exist, and punishes players for experimenting. One test chamber has a very prominent blue gel pipe for getting to a higher area, but no switch to turn it on. Another allows the player to extend a light bridge to the exit, but puts an emancipation grid between the ever-necessary cube and the player. Unlike the original games, the mod also allows players to get “stuck” in an area if they make an incorrect choice, where the only solution is to reload or commit suicide. All of this is made worse by the fact that many event triggers are obscure, with the connection lines either hidden or poorly marked.

All around, this makes for a frustrating game that feels like it’s trying too hard to make itself difficult, rather than challenging the player to try something new. Though the story is well done, the test chamber design kills this mod long before it gets on its feet.

There are many good adaptations that do not remain true to their source material. This is not one of them.

The developers did a good job of emulating the look of the Avatar universe, but the similarities end there. While enemies and environments will look familiar, the game has none of the show’s charm, themes, or characterization. What’s left is a basic fighting game, and not a very good one at that. The story is dull, the fights are monotonous , and the quicktime events often feel forced.

The only highlight of the game is in the bending: each element has its own unique combos and animations, using attacks taken from the show. Unfortunately you need to trudge through half of the game to unlock all of the elements, and a second full playthrough before you actually start to feel powerful when fighting. It’s fun to play as the fully-fledged avatar, switching between bending styles at will and beating enemies to a pulp. It just shouldn’t take two playthroughs of a game before it becomes fun.

If you’re absolutely dying to see more from the Avatar universe, pick this up on sale. If you’re looking for a fun fighting game, look elsewhere.

It's linear, short (~4 hours), and an incredible amount of fun. The gunplay is very satisfying and the story will keep you hooked.

One of the best games I have ever played. Part platformer, part psychotropic experience. The characters are psychotic, the environments are varied and colorful, the gameplay is fun, and you never know what's coming up next. Save the summer camp, save the world!
