It's fine unless you want to do something the program can't do (there is a voting platform for how features get pointed, so if you want a feature then do vote on it) or can't ignore frustrating unpolished early access jank.

The game starts with a black screen with some buttons on it. I press the buttons that make me join a singleplayer game. I get a loading screen stating connecting to server (in a singleplayer match? that's worrying, if true then no offline singleplayer, which I'd say is the main reason for singleplayer mode in a two player game), momentarily I see the board just to get booted back to the main menu.

My guess is this is could be because of Steam Play, Steam's compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux, which is needed because while there was a Linux build for the crowd funding campaign demo there no longer is one for the release.

tl;dr game don't work on my machine, can't play it, just look at card art and plan decks inside an empty void

Game is not capable of being played every other patch. This is a result of Valve's testing process in which they push their changes to production and see how many people complain. This would be barely tolerable, if issues were fixed faster than six months, or if at least you didn't get leaver queue trying to find out if the game "works" (which for Valve, means losing 60% of your FPS every year).
