Was gonna write some snarky review like "Okhlos walked so Hades could run" but honestly the mechanic is fun and worth trying at a discounted price

Played on Linux (Ubuntu 16.04)

By far the prettiest of all the Infinity Engine games, it looks even better adapted to hi-def. I had this game when I was a kid and could never get very far, so it's an absolute delight to go back and finish what I started.

The story is definitely clunky and forgettable (random event, followed by some happenstance, with a dash of coincidence drive the plot forward). That said, the gameplay and graphics are great.

I found one really minor sound bug, but other than that, it's nearly the ideal Enhanced Edition (just wish there were achievements).

Definitely worth it on sale.

This is from the same studio which made the horror masterpiece Amnesia: Dark Descent. This game isn't as horrifying, but more smartly written. It's like a horror/thriller version of The Talos Principle, in that both deal heavily with artificial intelligence (although that's actually sort of debatable here...), but this game deals with it in a much more nuanced and successful way (whereas Talos was heavy-handed and exhaustingly pseduo-intellectual, but that's a rant for another time).

Like Amnesia, this game is on the shorter side: ~8.5 hours for me. I think the price point, especially if you can catch it on sale, is worth it.

It's a very focused game, especially if you're like me and get super distracted by achievements, with most of the objectives quickly becoming clear, even if you dread having to open that door.

An excellent story-rich existential horror game. Recommended.

It's tough, but ultimately I can't recommend this game, especially at full price.

Pros:
+Beautiful art direction
+Seriously the lighting is gorgeous
+Good variety of level locations (especially the one with all the dead giants)
+Really cool controls

Cons:
-"Story" relies on atmosphere more than any narrative
-Annoying voice acting (they speak in a Simoleon-esque gibberish the whole time)
-Admittedly well-produced but repetitive and annoying music (it's just a woman yodeling/falestto-screeching generic Eastern European folk melodies)
-Repetitive platforming
-Easy puzzles due to the extremely linear level design
-Controls can be finnicky sometimes

All-in-all, I couldn't get into this game. It is atmospheric, but in a grating way. The story is lackluster, and almost non-existent. The ending was telegraphed. I just think that there are better short, story-driven, atmospheric games out there, especially for the price point.

I got this game for free from AMD when I got my new computer, but BE WARNED that if you have even a mild proclivity for motion sickness, you should stay away. Luckily Steam now offers refunds, so you can return it if you suffer the same fate. I literally cannot play this game without getting sweaty and feeling nauseous. I even tried editing files per a community suggestion, but it doesn't work. Barf.

I bought this game on sale the instant I saw the trailer. Honestly, it's the best trailer I've seen in a while. As a general rule, I always like to check the reveiews to see how long on average a game will take. If everyone were to follow this rule, we wouldn't have to deal with the bellyaching about beautiful games like this or Gone Home which are on the shorter side. All in all, the main game takes about 3-5 hours. Overall it's a pretty linear game, but it still feels like you could get lost in the woods, never to return.

The story is amazing, and won't reveal itself until the very end. Like all good entertainment, it leaves you wanting more, but doesn't feel lacking at all. It's a gorgeous and sad world stuck in the early evening on a breezy late summer day. The atmosphere is killer. Be warned there are some jump scares, but the real unsettling tension of the game comes from the storyline, and the pervading influence of the Unknown. My best comparison to the atmosphere/horror would be a detective noir Lovecraft story set during the day. If you like story-driven adventures, it's a must buy.
