When you add it all up together, you have a great political strategy game that offers a choice of playstyles, all of which are entirely worthwhile. Play a quick game with a cynical Machiavellian approach, or take in a long-term election campaign trying to be the best animal possible. Wrapping all the political trickery in a cute bow of bright colours and friendly animals, and you have a cracking game.

Some people won’t be convinced by the game this year and will stick with their saves from last year’s edition. But looking at the game this year, and comparing to my long running 2015 save, I can see the changes to the match engine, contracts and finances and quality of life improvements adding up. It doesn’t hurt that this is the most polished and accurate the match engine has felt for many years.

Will picking up 2017 change your life if you’ve been enjoying one of the recent games? No, but you will certainly end up with a more rounded management experience, with the extras like Fantasy Draft now offering you something worth checking out. So for the main game, I am recommending you take the plunge and put your faith in SI that this is worth your time and money.

Hearts of Iron IV is a great war game, there are few things as enjoyable as crafting the perfect battleplan, executing it, and watching your troops march across Europe, or Africa, or any location you want.

Brilliant! I hear you cry, I'll buy it right away! A few pointers for those who have played Crusader Kings 2 or Stellaris - there isn't as much focus on diplomatic dealings, and internal politics are fairly limited. Keep that in mind, this isn't the same game as Paradox's recent hits.

It is still damn good fun.

First impressions of DiRT Rally are very good, I am so happy to see a game actually focus on the art of rallying without superfluous gymkhana events and such like. The handling model isn’t as polished as I would have hoped, I feel like it suffers from understeer too often, but this is a great start from Codemasters and I'm looking forward to what will come in the next few months.

Isometric turn-based RPGs aren’t normally my cup of tea, but I had heard good things about Divinity: Original Sin, and having been a quiet fan of Divinity II: Ego Draconis, a third-person RPG in the lineage, I decided to check the game out through Steam’s Early Access. You can count me as pleasantly surprised and quite keen to see what else the game will have to offer as it goes through development.

This is still a game in the early stages of development, but I see a bright future. It looks gorgeous and the presence of legendary tracks like the 1966 layout of Monza and Imola mean you can breathe in the nostalgia. A hearty recommendation already.
