A colorful and unexpected mix of genres, with town building, survivor-like gameplay, dungeons, epic boss fights... even dating!
Confusing and overwhelming, but brimming with content!
I can't wait to sink more time into it. I will update my review then.

Mythical Mayhem popped up in my recommendations out of nowhere. It looked colorful and fun, and the price tag was fair, so I thought "why not?".
Oh boy... I didn't expect to find such a gem.

The game
Mythical Mayhem is a card-based RPG with two modes : scenario mode, and campaign mode.
In scenario mode, you can choose a scenario to play, which will unlock a new hero deck if you complete it.
There is a wide variety of hero decks which come with their own cards. You can pick between 3 and 5 of those decks to play through a scenario, depending on the decks used by the scenario. Each scenario has an arch-villain, a win condition, a defeat condition, etc.
You can also make your own custom scenario and decide who you're going to fight, and all the other parameters, which is pretty neat.
In campaign mode, you start by making your own hero card (how cool is that?!) and you are launched into a story-driven campaign in which heroes will join you along your progression, depending on your choices and how you solve the quests.
In this mode, you don't use the unlocks from scenario mode, and instead add things to your arsenal progressively, which feels very satisfying. There are side objectives that give you extra rewards and story bits later on, too.
You can upgrade your own hero card by spending experience on it, allowing it to gain stats and effects of your choice. Again, this is a fantastic idea!

The gameplay
The main strength of Mythical Mayhem resides in how neatly every little aspect of its gameplay fits together.
After playing through the short tutorials (more of which are coming soon), it doesn't take long to get accustomed to its clear and easy-to-use interface. Most things are well-explained, the rest isn't difficult to figure out.
A run of the game consists in beating its goal before the arch-villain can do the same with their own goal. You will use your hero cards against the adventure deck, drawn by the game as you move forward.
Lots of options are offered, from playing resource cards to spend said resources on mercenaries, new cards to add to your deck for this run, healing your wounds, etc. to attacking the minions of the arch-villain as they try to plow through the lands and escape with loot and, sometimes, hostages!
Picking which cards to play each turn is a true mental exercise, as a lot of cards can combo with the cards in your hand, the cards you've played, the minions on the board, etc.
Balance is also a thing to consider and keep an eye on, as it works like a karma gauge, bringing you good or bad gifts depending on where it's at, and often making the arch-villain stronger!
There is so much to say about the gameplay I could make an essay but do yourself a favor and check out the many videos posted by the dev. You will see how smoothly the game plays.

The graphics
One of the main things that caught my attention were the graphics. They are very colorful and varied, with each card easily recognized at a glance.
It should be noted that the game mixes traditional art with AI-generated art. The dev is very transparent about it and made sure the assets are properly licensed.
A sharp eye can spot a few funky things in the AI art, but all-in-all, it doesn't clash at all with the traditional art at all.

The sound
There isn't much to say about the sounds nor the music of Mythical Mayhem: they do their job without much to write home about.
One exception is what I call the "Whitney Houston" card. You'll know it when you play it.

The content
As mentioned previously, Mythical Mayhem offers a wide variety of cards, separated in various categories: hero decks, arch-villain decks, gear decks, minion decks, etc.
The amount of content there is, along with the custom scenario mode, makes for a greatly replayable game, especially with how easy it is to get a run started and how smoothly the gameplay flows.
I can't say much about the length of campaign mode, as I haven't been very far into it yet. I will update my review at a later point.

The dev
I was able to get in touch with the dev and we had a long chat about the game. I was also able to stream the game for him as I played my first campaign mode run and he explained a few advances strategies to me. I was also able, through my new player experience, to help the dev spot a few things that could be improved, like adding some tooltips, fixing some typos, etc.
And this is why I love indie games: they are made with heart, with a real person behind them and no pressure to release an unfinished product. The dev is open to suggestions to improve his game, which he had been doing for months before I got the game.

The conclusion
I have played quite a few deck-building games, like Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Erannorth Reborn, Erannorth Chronicles, etc.
Mythical Mayhem, within a few hours of gameplay, has managed to secure a spot in my heart as my favorite deck-building game, because of its clever gameplay, well-thought interface, plentiful content, and, so far, total absence of any bugs.
I will be purchasing a second copy of the game for my best friend and will recommend it around me.
If you were on the fence about getting the game and this review hasn't managed to sway you, hop on the Discord server to interact with the community and the dev.
The world of Mythical Mayhem needs more heroes!

Buyers, beware: when you shut down this game, it keeps a process in the background that makes Steam believe it is still running, which means it keeps adding to your total playtime.

When you try to kill the process, it keeps re-opening itself over and over.

Whether it is a dishonest practice to make you go beyond the 2 hour refund limit or a ridiculous oversight, I won't support this game further and I asked for a refund.

Oh yeah: the game is cute and I might get it again once they fix it.

Developers, please respect your customers.

This game feels like a mix between Warframe and Destiny.

Fun action-based gameplay, dynamic combats, open world events, dungeons with matchmaking, crafting, grinding for materials... The gameplay loop is genuinely fun and the graphics are gorgeous.

The game is having issues at the moment: extreme login queues, some people getting kicked, etc.
But this is a launch and the issues will be ironed out. Killing a game based on its released state in Early Access isn't a proof of maturity nor respect for the devs.

Entirely worth playing in its current state. Keep in mind that the game will be free2play in 2024, though.

If you end up getting this game and enjoying it, don't hesitate to leave a positive review to offset the flood of entitle brat reviews.

Have fun !

What a great game!

As a fan of oldschool CRPGs, souls-likes and sandbox games, this is a dream come true, and it's still in Early Access.

The world is vast, with a lot of places to explore and quests to do. Depending on the choices you make during character creation, you probably won't get to experience the same things as another player, as the world itself moves forward as time passes by.

On the RPG side, it's simple enough to be accessible, but with enough options to keep it interesting.
Each character has stat points to spend, as well as perks and skills (4 of each) to pick to make your build. If you want to be a spell-slinging Dwarf with a focus on cooldown reduction, you can ! If you want to be a brutal Orc that uses both melee and ranged attacks, you can too !
Loot is plentiful, and there's crafting too. Quests give some nice rewards as well!
There are companions, of which you can recruit 4 depending on your character's alignment. They're really efficient! Especially when controlled by a friend in Remote Play. A little caveat, though: they're not full-on characters like your champion. You don't get to spend their points, pick their skills, etc. Their builds are fixed, but they have personal dialogues and quests you can do for them, which is pretty cool.

Combat is hard, but fun and rewarding. Everytime I get hit, I know exactly why, and I realize it's my own fault. The controls are responsive and, so far, all the fights have been fair and balanced. A little note: the game is designed with gamepad controls in mind, but it works with keyboard and mouse controls too.

The soundtrack is nice and varied, but some musics are a bit repetitive (especially the inn one). Sound effects are good and the general atmosphere of the game is really interesting.

I have spotted some minor issues in the quest dialogues: some spelling issues, and some punctuation chaos happening here and there, but all-in-all, the story of the game and its quests have been entertaining and I always want to learn more of the lore.

It is one of my favorite games this year, and I play a lot of them. I can't wait to see what's coming next during the Early Access.

The game has an official Discord server on which the devs reply to your comments and bug reports, which is always nice.

So, what are you waiting for? Get the game and join the fight against Alaloth! :)

This game reminds me of my childhood. I was immediately thrown back to games like Rampage and Walker.

There's a lot of variety in the Gigas you can play, and a lot of attention to details in the sprite work.
Every Giga has a bunch of different skins, which change both gameplay aspects and the appearance of the Giga and of all of its skills.

With few inputs and a simple gameplay loop, they managed to make an addicting grindy game.

Oh... and you can pet and feed your Giga like it's a Tamagotchi.

Nominated for the "Labor of Love" award. :)

Where do I even begin ? This game is amazing, a true work of love.

The gameplay is pretty much flawless, a real pleasure for a fan of turn-based tactical RPGs. There's a wide variety of skills, traits, gear... along with a bunch of cleverly designed systems that make this game a great experience.

The art of the game is beautiful, and the characters are detailed and varied enough that you immediately recognize them and grow attached to them (even when they go through horrendous transformations...).
The comic style is a welcome change, with its stories and random scenes presented in panels. I'm really fond of the stories the game tells.

The music is great (especially the ending song !), and the sounds do their job, nothing too special.

One thing I'd like to mention is the bestiary. It's not often that you find a game that doesn't go the easy "dwarf - elf - orc - goblin" route. Everything in this game feels totally alien, even for a long-time gamer. Definitely a big plus !

Another thing I really enjoy is being able to keep characters from one story to another and promoting them. It'd be a crime to let your players grow so attached to these carefully (and sometimes randomly !) handcrafted characters, and not let them keep them forever ! :)

All in all, I can safely say that Wildermyth is among my favorite games of 2019, well above many AAA games.

If you like tactical RPGs like Battle Brothers, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark, Mordheim: City of the Damned... then you should consider buying this game.

Do it. You'll love it.
