How did I not see this game release on Steam ?

What we have here is a true gem : an oldschool roguelike with modern ideas !

It starts simply enough : you pick between 3 races, then 3 classes, and off you go... but you'll quickly notice this isn't your typical fantasy roguelike.

I'd try to explain the story, but I don't want to spoil anything, and... I also wouldn't know where to start. It's as weird as it gets ! References to the Necronomicon and the works of H.P. Lovecraft abound, and give this game a truly eerie feeling.

The artstyle is amazing : definitely retro, but with a great sense of detail, and everything fits together just right. I feel like I'm playing an old dungeon crawler on my Amiga 500 again !

The soundtrack is somewhat limited but I love the chiptune. It does get repetitive after a while, and the dev is working on a sound preference screen to change the volume. As much as I like the music, I'd like it to be quiter after a while.
The sounds fit the style of the game : retro and serviceable, with some sounds being a bit too loud / repeated each turn.

Gameplay-wise, it's really good : it plays fast (for a turn-based game) if you know what you're doing, but beware ! The game can be unforgiving if you let yourself be surrounded, or if you don't pay attention to what you're fighting.
The game plays equally well with a gamepad or keyboard, but I prefer the former, as it feels more natural. The UI is well-done and entirely usable with a gamepad.

So what makes this roguelike different ? It's all about the setting, the choice of music, lore, weird powers that you can get (I started worshipping a meat god and became a demon !), the acid trip-like feeling of the whole game (reminding me a lot of Hotline Miami in that sense)...
Crazy things happen throughout the game, like getting a warning about something you did affecting all your savegames (I'm not kidding !). Speaking of savegames, and that will probably make some roguelike purists frown, the characters are carried between playthroughs, levels and items. I like that design choice, as it matches the crazy theme of the game.

The whole game feels like a very personal love letter to the genre, with lots of crazy ideas thrown in, making for a truly enjoyable roguelike experience.

What a blast to the past !

This game is a great tribute to games like Emerald Mines on computers from the Amiga 500 era. It plays exactly like the gold old games !

The controls feel responsive, the game has a nice chiptune intro and it even has leaderboards and a 2-player mode.

I'm probably heavily influenced by the nostalgia factor, but the game is entertaining and fun to play.

A relaxing collection of pirate-themed mini-games, each with their own gameplay and rules.
Cooperating with the crew and captain of a ship is cleverly done and awesome !

Dungeons & Robots is a hidden gem.

Gameplay-wise, it's a lot of fun. You get to make your own set of robots from various parts that you loot or craft and you can swap between them during missions. Loot is abundant and you can mix 'n match weapons. You even get to loot equippable skills.

Crafting feels satisfying, especially when you get a good roll, as items are totally random, and you can recycle the ones you don't want.

Co-op is where the game truly shines and you are actually rewarded for teaming up. There are also skills to support your teammates : healing, shields, etc.

Graphics are pleasing and are reminiscent of the late Darkspore. There isn't a huge variety of scenery or monsters, but since levels are randomly generated, it keeps things fresh. The explosions and various particle effects are well done.

The music feels a bit too quiet for this type of game, but it's good. The sound effects serve their purpose, nothing too fancy here.

Many of the issues mentioned in the previous reviews have since been fixed. The devs are very close to their community and listen to suggestions and bug reports. I've reported bugs that got fixed within a few hours.

All in all, it is a great pastime, especially for the price tag. The co-op is fun and bullets fly everywhere.

Below Kryll is an amazing game.

It plays very much like Super House of Dead Ninjas, but what makes it truly unique is what lies beyond the first few tutorial levels : a whole world made by the players themselves !

Featuring a very easy-to-use and friendly level editor, Below Kryll allows you to go crazy and make any kind of level you want. A complicated adventure with a twisted plot, spanning across several levels ? Yep. A torture chamber filled with deadly traps ? Why not ! A pixel art gallery that you visit on a moving platform as player-made music plays ? Definitely !

The game feels rewarding both as a player and as a creator, as several good ideas were used.
As you complete levels and gather the shurikens scattered around them, your character will level up and unlock new moves (sword attacks, flying tricks...) and you will be granted access to deeper levels.
When you create a level, people can play through it, apply tags to it from a list, and leave a comment. And you, the creator, get trophy points that you can spend to buy new things to use in your levels.

All in all, it's a very addicting and creative game that you can explore in various ways depending on your mood.

I played multiplayer and got groped repeatedly.
10/10, would mount strangers again.
