An incredibly polished and complete free Half-Life 2 mod, putting most of the commercial offerings to shame. It is overwhelmingly puzzle rather than combat focused, which is fine because the puzzles are generally great - the one major complaint I can think of (for the mod in general) is that some of them involve a lot of repetitious travel back and forth carrying key items or turning on and off switches. Otherwise complaints would all be in the nature of 'too many too-similar weapons', 'some music seems a little too long', etc. pettiness.

The tangentially connected in-universe story is pretty exceptional as such goes, IMO. Lots of great concepts actually used well.

I was initially intrigued but very quickly lost patience with it, for its horrible jank and for all the ways it pointedly defies Source/HL2 norms, none of them for the better. Voice acting is not funny-bad and is frequently too weirdly quiet and slurred to make any sense of. Weird seemingly pointless limited weapon system. Enemies seem to all be just fast moving zombies that run up to you to do constant melee damage. The environments are mostly pointlessly huge and your limited sprint and the fact of every single door being a teleport with a couple-seconds long fade to and from black makes them just a chore to navigate. Saving is limited to environmental interactive items (journal books), and enemies can kill you quickly and unexpectedly enough to make it very annoying having to replay long stretches. Especially when there is just plain buggy/janky nonsense where sometimes your weapons won't work at all if you're too close to an interactive object (which tries to change your viewmodel pose to 'hint' to you). I died twice in a row to that and decided I'd seen enough.

Fairly direct nice and short puzzle game. Requires some reading, which basically just directly tells you what to do and gives some backstory. As a free game it's impossible to criticize too much. I will say it feels like probably could be cut down in filesize enough to be made a browser experience, though.

Brilliant demo for what will surely be a brilliant game.

Starts SteamVR for no reason. Loud and painful to look at monster maze. To its credit it probably is actually able to be completed, but it's just REALLY unpleasant to play and so I'm not gonna.

Somehow underrated apparently, when I'd just presumed it had been an 'indie darling' at some point? Maybe too much of an actual game for that.

Did I miss the joke?
Gripping narrative, hardly. Philosophical insight, HELL NO. Terrible performance for awful graphics. Awful annoying and pointless find-the-object 'gameplay'. Nothing makes any sense, all the moral philosophy is absurd, the 'life flashing before your eyes'/'divine judgement' framing plot goes NOWHERE.

Was this just made specifically for children, and I'm way overthinking it?

The initial free demo is of very high quality, and the devs seem to have if anything too many ambitions. Good luck!
