I love the detail, the music, the graphics. The micro-managing and then automation play appeals to me. I find the exploration of other ships, while putting together story arcs also interesting. That there are persistent characters both on board the ship, and in the rest of the universe you explore make it even better.
The only downside has perhaps been the incompatibility between updates making old games unplayable.
