A hack and slash game with arguably the most responsive combat system out of them all. A grueling experience of getting your ass handed to you over and over again, this game is completely unsuitable for those seeking an arcade experience. For those wanting to spend hundreds of hours challenging themselves - this game is for you. Keep in mind that the community is small and dwindling, meaning that it's mostly old-timers who have remained. Hop on to duel servers and they'll even teach you how to not lose so bad all the time.

My profile says 219 hours. In reality it's much, much more. I have spent literal weeks in this game and for good reason. When this was released back in 2007, it was the only multiplayer melee slasher and it set the stage for a whole new genre of video games. Nothing even like this had been ever tried before. Sure you had games like Mount & Blade, but that was a single-player RPG. AoC however took things to a whole new level, a skill-based objective-driven team melee slasher. I could go hours into the intricacies of the swordplay, the dynamics of the maps, the atmosphere, the difficult yet elegant way the siege weapons were implemented, but I will not bother you. This game was amazing, it did so many things right and while being a third party mod, it sparked a new game studio to pop up and inspired many more in the video game industry. This game was the first frontiersman in the world of multiplayer melee slashers. A true relict. For a good bout of nostalgia, I recommend setting up a server with your friends and chopping off each others heads!
