Bottom line up front:
1. Did not follow the formula of other homeworlds -small maps, large terrain features, lack of unit variety
2. Fleet combat feels sped up and like you are squished together against your opponents - just generally off compared to previous games.
3. Feel like the primary way to play is to zerg your opponents.

Honestly, I am disappointed. HW and HW2 were ahead of their time and HW3 feels like it is taking a backwards step. All maps focus on utilizing large structure or terrain features and forgo the large maps and big fleet engagements that made HW 1&2 so fun. Gone are the days of hiding your fleet in a remote section as you scrape to survive in multiplayer. The weapon platforms even require you to mount to large objects, and the maps anchor you relatively close to your opponents. I have found the only real way to play the game as it stands is to zerg the enemy. Fleet based strategies seem unimportant, at least compared to previous homeworlds. They didn't even bother putting old maps in the game, likely because the current mechanics would not work well with them. Oh, and the units AI are awful, but this will likely be fixed with a patch in the future I hope.

I hope to revise this review in the future.

The game is great, I just wish the hacker issue would be resolved. I can have a great run, with great gear, then get auto aimed from a dude in full sprint, as they run around a corner from 40 meters away. Great potential. Still enjoyable, especially if you play before the the late PM.

Great game. Was sus of it at first, but it is tremendously funny and customizable.

I normally don't play 2d games.. but this is probably one of the best games in years. Elegant in it's simplicity, and how that simplicity creates such a complex game experience.

11 hrs in - Hard to dig into. I see a lot of potential, but the randomness of the game makes it hard to live long. The mechanics are very punishing and it essentially comes down to moral and cash (IMO). The dev (only one guy) seems to be making updates regularly so I will wait for it to become more balanced and thus enjoyable. Happy to support though.

I would mod the game. Most of people's complaints can be addressed through mods. Divide et Impera is my favorite, it changes the feel of the battles dramatically, (along with a lot of other stuff) especially if you enjoy more grindy battles and where fatigue actually matters. Diplomacy actually works as well (sometimes).

It is not as immersive as Arma, it is not as action packed at Battlefield, it's just right to hop on and have fun.

This game is horrible by any modern day game standard. Very limiting in the way you can approach each misison. I feel like there is only one or two locations to take your shot and and only one way to prevent the enemy from hearing. (by a generator or thunder). Very disapointed. Glad I only payed 10 bucks.
