"Brilliant" and "terrifying" are clearly very subjective, because per headlines and reviews, the expectation of something verging on greatness here is set.

While it's the start of a neat concept, there was nothing terrifying or psychologically trying here for me. No, I'm not some horror buff who isn't scared by anything anymore; nor am I someone who lacks an imagination that fills in the gaps with frightening imagery.

I've seen a lot of people gush about the sound design, too. Again, while off to a decent start, if you've played something like Papa Sangre, then there will be nothing trying here for you.

As for overall tension, the only tension I experienced was trying to brace myself for jump-scares. The gap between trying to prepare for that, and what ultimately came to pass, was vast.

It's free, so, by all means, please do give it a try. Just don't be surprised if the hype of positive reviews builds you up for the game, only to end up leaving you with a big old, "That's it?" at the end of the experience.

The intent of this review is not to have my subjective experience deter the developer from continuing to explore whatever landscapes they want to explore. I just wanted to chime in as someone who felt weirdly at odds with what the majority of others seem to have walked away with from the experience. I can't help but ask, "Did I miss something?"

Early Access Review
I've played this game off and on for years, and though it has certainly had (and still has) its issues, there's absolutely no game on the market like 7D2D. If you're a new player, it will seem on the surface like there isn't much to this game; however, there's an immense amount of depth. It's basically like that feeling when you first begin to understand just how much there is to do/find/see in Minecraft. Fully destructible environment, electricity system, crafting, looting, countless customizability options, 3rd party mods, super-active community and fan base, lots of PvE and PvP servers, endless replayability...it's got it all.

That said, there are quite a few annoyances for me, mostly with PvP as related to the sound engine in this game. As a whole, the sound engine needs quite a bit of love, but I'm confident they'll get around to it at some point. Either way, that's not a showstopper for me.

Just do yourself a favor and pick this game up. Wait until it's on sale if you have to; it's always on sale during Steam sales. Even at full price, it's more than worth it.
