I have been meaning to write a review for this game since I first played it in 2024 (last year as of writing this). I seldom put my thoughts on anything down in writing anymore, and it has been challenging to write all that I want to say about Outer Wilds without spoiling the experience for others.

First and foremost: this game is not for everyone. I thought it was at first, but it’s not. The gameplay is fully about exploring the unknown, and unraveling a greater mystery. This entails backtracking, reading, and a finer attention to detail than most other games. I don’t necessarily think the gameplay hooked me right away, but with motivation from a friend, I kept on with it and I’m glad I did.

The draw of the game, other than the technical marvel of the simulated solar system, is the creative way in which the story is told. It is brilliant. The story itself is also brilliant. You will reach a point while playing where you suddenly want to play as much as you can at once just to unravel the mystery and see how things resolve. Before this point, which is probably different for everyone, you’re likely going to play the game for about an hour or two at a time at most. I would say more about the story in particular but this becomes impossible without spoiling. Everyone should go into this game blind, or with minimal knowledge beyond it being a narrative-driven space game. This is because, as any Outer Wilds fan will tell you, you can only play this game one time. You will never be able to un-experience the game, for the game is the story, and once you know it, there isn’t much more to do. That is by design.

The soundtrack is amazing, I don’t have much else to say here. I wouldn’t look it up before finishing the game as the song titles contain potential spoilers. You’ll also want to hear the songs in the context of the game first, I think, as it adds depth to each track. I use some of the songs to help me relax or go to sleep… they’re great.

There is one DLC for Outer Wilds. I think that it makes sense to play the base game first, all of the way through, before doing the DLC content. I actually recommend having the DLC uninstalled or un-owned until finishing the base game so that you don’t accidentally come across that content (what I believe to be) too early. The DLC content has a lot to do with the base game’s story, so it doesn’t make much sense for someone to do it without the knowledge of that story ahead of time. The DLC alters the ending of the game slightly.

Are there any cons to Outer Wilds? Like I said, it’s not a game for everybody. Some will put it down before getting very far into the game because of that, understandably. This is unfortunate of course, because I find the story to be fantastic and absolutely for everybody, but it should not be experienced without the game to go along with it. This is perhaps a con, then, since it can be difficult to get people to play the game. You can’t tell them much about the game without spoiling it. The gameplay might not be for them, and yet you know they’ll love the story so you try your best to get them to play through it but come up short. Other than that, I don’t have many cons about the game save for some minor annoyance in the DLC area of the game, particularly due to an increased level of backtracking there.

All totaled, this is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played, in my top ten for sure. It’s a game like no other, and I think everyone should at least give it a try.

My friend and I bought this (or rather, he bought this for us) as a joke. The game does not even function on the most basic level, and after an hour of troubleshooting in order for us to play together, little to no progress was made. Conclusion: Game SUX.
