What happens when you strip out all pay-to-win elements of an MMO, but forget to rebalance the game, and cross it with some neat hero/RTS mechanics? You get this game. I'd like to be able to recommend it, but I just uninstalled it.

There are aspects that I really dig; the epic fights make you feel like your hero is some kind of crazy god, and at times it feels like you really are fighting an epic battle. But the story is nothing but fetch and quests punched with RTS fights that end with broken rolls and loot that never seems to be for your class. There's a dizzying amount of troops that seem to have minor differences, and absolutely everything (including until the last patch, talking in general chat) costs gold, or cubits, which cost your time grinding content over and over soullessly. There are enough residual Asian MMO grinding aspects that it frankly ruins the RTS parts.

I played to about level 22, and the gold suck/expensive auction/grind to get crafting materials/low pop was already so blatantly obvious that I shudder to think what the folks touting $2mil gold in general chat did to play this game enough to grind out the gold. If you want to hold down a part-time job, or generally function in society, I'd avoid this game.

Early Access Review
My husband gave me a heads-up when he saw this game released as early access, and I haven't been disappointed!

I totally dig the gameplay (it will scratch your dungeoncrawler itch). The paper motif takes a little getting used to, and you're limited to moving where the paths in the game go (and mobs don't have this limitation), so fights take some planning, and the card system is deeper than it originally looked (it's a card system instead of the usual RPG skill tree), but I count all of those as positives. It's worth playing with the combination of armor cards and active spell cards. You can trade them pretty much on the fly, so if you get stuck on a level it's worth mixing and matching. I love that there's a slider that lets you choose the dungeon size; sometimes I just don't have a ton of time to play, but I can still get my fix in with a smaller dungeon.

It's early release, but a lot smoother than I've seen with other early release games. There are some tweaks they could work on:
1/ difficulty in freeplay doesn't seem to scale up that much (currently in .
2/ I love completing a dungeon level, but sometimes loot and/or mobs are hidden or bugged, even when I've walked through repeatedly (seemed to happen more in story mode than freeplay mode).
3/ Some of the copious Steam achievements don't seem to sync (eg. warrior level 3 cards).

I can't wait for the rogue and mage to be unlocked, and for more books to be released! (Book of Demons is the first of seven games planned). I definitely recommend picking this up!

It's a little cracky like a lot of mmos, so I took it out of my steam library, but played and enjoyed it until I got to end game. Like a lot of other reviewers said, there are substantial pay walls at end game that make it just too much of a grind. Between enchants, salvaging, talismans, gems, artifacts, butcher runes, much less gear, it will take quite some time to grind it all out, and in-game gold (all of the previous take in-game money to advance). If you don't get a patron account, you can't sell on the AH; if you do, you can sell some things on the AH, but not enough to really make money, unless you grind the same 4 dungeons ALL day. I paid $40, my husband paid $60, and while we felt we got our money's worth, we started doing the grind math and it wasn't working out. If you're looking to kill a lot of time in your life, like you're looking to drop out of college, maybe look to this, but otherwise find something better to do.

I love point & click games, and this one was totally a fun, good time. The back and forth was a little trippy at first, but got the hang of it. If you get stuck on one, switch over to the other. Definitely recommended!
