Phenomenal game, albeit one that feels ever so slightly half baked. But you will get more than your money's worth. Probably the best 6 dollars I've ever spent on steam, certainly in the top 10 indie games I've ever played. The movement and platforming (the core focus of the game) is probably some of the best I've ever played. I guess I'd compare it to Celeste in 3D but more freeform and less focused on raw obstacle course difficulty. It barely manages to beat Mario 64 for my favorite 3d platforming and that is the highest praise I can give it.

However, if you come to this game looking for depth beyond just the rock solid platforming, you'll be disappointed. It's an amazingly delicious entree that leaves you a bit hungry. Story of any kind is threadbare and combat is something you only really properly encounter two or three times throughout the game and even then its just alright.

Gameplay aside, it's got a delightful aesthetic reminiscent of the N64 and I really dig it. Unique but nostalgic. And the music is pretty good too! No stand out ear worms but some delightful tunes that suit the vibe perfectly and keep you groovin while you play.

At the end of the day, I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful little gem. 9/10, I am desperately yearning for a sequel that will expand on the flawless core this game has. 9/10, I will be paying close attention to this dev's future output.

This game is cool! Geist crossed with Portal crossed with Deus Ex. Clunky as all hell but that's an intentional part of the design, its a good kind of janky. Real fun, tons of creative ways to solve problems. In the first level I found a way to both prop fly and clip out of bounds, and a little secret left by the developers made sure I knew they knew what I was up to. Story and writing are (so far) charming but not the focus, and that's probably for the best in a game like this one. Give it a go, if you like immersive sims and/or breaking janky games, you'll have fun.

A lovely short little game that put a big ass goofy ass smile on my little non-cis-questioning face :)

Up front: I've been following this game since its demo came out and I enjoyed it, enough to play through its entirety in one day (two sittings). That might clue you in, but it is a rather short game, clocking in at around 5-6 hours on a first playthrough. Also I won't be spoiling anything.

I'll go ahead and get negatives out of the way first: It's pretty short for 18 bucks (maybe I'm just a cheapskate) and the story is incredibly lackluster in my opinion. I expected a genuine mystery but much of it was nonexistent, unanswered, or the answers weren't very interesting. It's also extremely tedious at times. Sometimes due to the punishing yet clunky combat, sometimes due to area/map layout, and sometimes due to puzzles that are juuuust a bit too obtuse for my liking. By that I mean, the answers are relatively simple in a couple of them, but the connection between the clue and the puzzle isn't very strong. As for the combat, it is punishing, particularly because save points are few and far between. Having to spend 3 minutes walking through empty rooms and hallways to get back to a boss isn't a good 'punishment' for failure, and I find the combat a bit too clunky for that steep of a punishment.

NOW ONTO POSITIVES! The game is an aesthetic delight. Casper, being a one man dev/artist/modeler/designer/etc has done an astoundingly good job at capturing the aesthetic he wanted to. It not only feels authentically retro/PS1 styled, but also rather unique in many ways. The voice acting is nicely awkward and weird, the pre-rendered backgrounds are eerie and gorgeous, not to mention the pre-rendered cutscenes have that amazing 90's CGI jank to them. I can't praise the visuals and sound design enough. The map was also, overall, very nicely laid out. An interesting and unique puzzle box that you pick your way through one key at a time. Perhaps not quite on the level of RE1's mansion, but its still fun to explore and figure out. The music, while not necessarily catchy, is extremely fitting, and really sets the vibe. Also I love Pol.

In conclusion: Pick this one up if you like the aesthetic because that is top tier, but be ready for a bit of frustration in some areas, and don't go in expecting a gripping story. Maybe wait for a sale if you're broke as hell like I am lol. Looking forward to Casper's future work, especially if he continues with this retro aesthetic he's captured so well.

Early Access Review
Well, it is finally fully finished. After nine odd years in development, Black Mesa is complete, and what a feat it is. If you're a Half-Life fan, or if you have any interest in getting into Half-Life, you owe it to yourself to play this game. It in no way replaces the original, but for newcomers and old fans alike, its an amazing way to experience the first game in the Half-Life series. It does everything the original did and more, and the things they've changed and/or added are equal to Valve's own level of quality. This game managed things that I didn't even know the source engine was capable of.

If this game interests you, get it, and play it. It's more than worth the price tag, and aside from some extremely minor complaints and a few odd crashes, it's everything I wanted and more. A big thanks to the developers for making me fall in love with one of my favorite games all over again.

This game was not bad. But it also wasn't good enough to warrent the money. It was a good attempt at many of the themes and ideas it presented, and I did want to see it explore them well, but with semi inconsistent characters, a lot of beating around the bush, not a whole lot of great art, It felt a bit like a fanfiction. It certainly wasn't a bad game, but there are better yuri visual novels on the market for the money you're spending here.

This little game, this tiny little work, has blown any other million dollar AAA title out of the water. WIll to kill is strong, but determination is stronger. A beautiful masterpiece, and probably the best written game I've ever played.

This definately kept me interested. It's a tad confusing to stop thinking with portals in a portal game. The voice actor did certainly try, but wasn't up to prefessional level. but this is a mod, so perfection isn't expected. The soundtrack was a huge plus, I really enjoyed it. I'd buy and listen to it for hours on it just like I did the Portal 2 soundtrack. I even got a few laughs out of it.
