Been involved since 2012, recently came back and played all the way through to 1999. This game beats Destiny 2 to death in broad daylight, and witnesses say they 'saw nothing'. My only complaints are the arbitrarily long crafting times, the sheer mind-boggling unapproachable aura of weapon/frame modding and the absurd drop-rates for most items found in the game; four days for an upgraded version of your character is kind of insane, and there's multiple items throughout the game that you might simply never see without engaging with the player-driven economy surrounding the premium currency, due to drop tables not being 100% guaranteed compounding on already low drop rates.

This is a seriously awesome game otherwise.

TL;DR: Don't play this game. It actively disrespects your time and has a community that will attempt to gaslight you into believing that nothing is wrong, it's simply you, and you need to get better. Hit the back button and go find a different F2P game to download, if you care at all about actually having fun when you launch a game and hit start.

Take my invested hours as a sign that you should really listen to me. I'm not a ten-thousand-hour player who's been here since this game was only airplanes, but I'm not a fresh download that doesn't get the game either. I have a decent amount of experience and I've engaged with almost all levels of this game beyond late cold war and modern vehicles. So when I say this, I say it hoping that even one person will see it:

Do not play this ♥♥♥♥. Even if it looks like it has good gameplay, that gameplay is overshadowed by numerous problems, some of which include but are not limited to: national bias running rampant (you will experience some heinous things that make zero sense and and when you point it out, people will tell you to 'git gud' or 'stop crying', people who are often taking explicit advantage of what the issue is), map design so bad that there's multiple points on every map that can simply be called 'unfair and unbalanced' with how they essentially win you the game, and quite simply criminal levels of monetization. This game is first and foremost a nickle-and-dime fest that generates absurd amounts of money for its creators, creators who actively want the worst experience for you, who seem to think that players play WT because they want to suffer. Creators who refuse to make progression faster, who refuse to stop monetizing every part of the experience, even to the point where they have the nerve to add an auction house, the latest '♥♥♥♥ you' to anyone who plays this game. Creators who refuse to do something even as simple as making CAS harder to get/more expensive to spawn. This is not a 'fun' game, no matter how many of your friends tell you, no matter how the Youtube videos look. Your friends are posturing, those Youtubers are paid to do it and playing WT is their literal job, so of course they're only gonna show you the absolute pinnacle of their experiences and frame the game to be something it's not. It's not indicative of the real experience, not even slightly.

Do yourself a favour, right now: hit the back button, go search up Gunner Heat PC, and buy that. One-time-purchase of thirty dollars/euros/whatever and you don't need to grind your soul away for the better part of a year just to finally mess around in an Abrams, which is what the majority of you probably want anyway. GHPC also doesn't force you into avenues like premium time and premium vehicles just to slightly alleviate the grind, which WT does with zero shame. Tech tree vehicles barely help you cover the cost and bridge the space between time spent and rewards earned, all but forcing you to buy premium time and vehicles if you want to spend less than a year of your life playing.

Imagine a game that's so min-maxed in terms of making you miserable, and then make it even worse. That's War Thunder at its normal, at its baseline; a miserable experience that can only be made slightly fun at the best of times. A game that makes playing almost impossible without spending upwards of a year and several months grinding with horrendously low payouts, dangling the prospect of 'spend money and it might get easier' in front of your face. I'm sure Gaijin is in the Dungeon of Evil right now, trying to figure out how they can make hitting the 'To Battle' button cost 5 GE every time you hit it, so they can get even MORE money.

Imagine so many systems in place that exist SOLELY to prolong the grind, not even to make it more fun, but to make sure you play even longer, and then imagine the people who made that system continually spending time to figure out how to make it worse, and you have Gaijin's design philosophy and approach to game creation

This game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks and so does Gaijin. They will never change, unless the community stops giving ground and actually holds the company accountable. I'm not totally convinced that this new wave of negative reviews will actually do anything; the last time this happened, the community instantly backed off and went 'so long as you're sorry' once Gaijin gave puppy eyes and tapped their fingertips together, only to have Gaijin go right back to being scumbags and reaching into player's pockets.

Just please, don't play this game. Play any other tank sim, but not this ♥♥♥♥. Even Steel Beasts is a better experience than War Thunder.

Strongly recommended. This is *THE* VR game for people who just wanna ♥♥♥♥ around with guns, but lack the funds of a rich Youtuber. However, I will say this immediately and be very clear about it;

This is a digital gun range first, an accurate weapon sim second, and a video game third. If you're not into guns, shooting guns and generally messing with things gun-related? If you're the type who needs a campaign with an explicitly labelled story mode? You're not gonna have a good time with this game.

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this game. It's an incredible VR game, don't get me wrong, but you will end up playing with racist children nine times out of ten, and the rare times you do end up in a lobby of adults, you will have to sit through a two hour seminar of real-world CQB tactics (the same seminar the last lobby of adults said)

This review has been changed to reflect the current state of the game, and will not be changed until conditions improve.

Do not buy for the time being, until Arrowhead has released a patch that fully addresses the issues of performance, file size and enemy/weapon balancing relations.

It's alright. I've had it for a long time but only played sporadically, and I regret doing so. I missed out on the game before they started relying on loot boxes and community maps.

Wait for a sale, otherwise, don't buy it.

If you expect this to be more of the same format that Doom 2016 had, please either leave those expectations at the door or just don't buy the game. It's fantastic otherwise; an awesome experience fueled by murder and metal. Switch your weapons and learn to combat your opponents properly or be punished for it, if you play on Ultra Violence and higher.

This feels much more akin to Doom 1 and 2 as far as fun factor and intrigue goes.

If they fix not being able to crouch while moving and the input delay on M+KB? It's a solid recommend. Until then, I'd say wait for the patch. The only reason I gave it a thumbs up is because there's no 'maybe' option.
