y'know, steam is showing these reccomendations on the front page of my friends' steam pages, and i find that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ HILARIOUS

anyways, game is peak asf

I was gifted this, and I am now the laughingstock of my friend group.

from a FPS standpoint, IAYB is a *really* good game, and a must-have if you enjoy fast-paced time-attack gameplay


whether it be jumping on an enemy or hacking and slashing through a wave of enemies, IAYB has you covered when it comes to fast-paced gameplay, similar to the likes of ULTRAKILL and TREPANG2. although the weapons don't sound *too* punchy compared to TREPANG2 or other games, you can really feel the power when hearing the click of a pistol, then seeing an X over an enemy's head. not to mention, primitive warfare exists too; out of ammo? a piece of tree bark will suffice as a club against multiple enemies. low on health? just grab those leaves, they'll heal you. (somehow.)

i was introduced into the game via the soundtrack and a friend; listening to TYRANTS BETTER RUN as a trailer song got me thinking the game would be fire, and honestly? it is. whether it be the pure "♥♥♥♥-you" energy in the synths, to the hardstyle basslines in some levels, the music closely matches up with what you're doing. it's a pretty good soundtrack for charging into enemies with a shotgun, a deathwish, and nothing of value to lose.


the premise is very simple to understand. you are a (former?) special agent in retirement, living in the woods. one of your former generals gets in contact with you, wanting you to do "one last job" despite it being the sixth time you've done a "one last job". as a result, you decline - not without pushback, however. the general sends enemies your way to try and convince you into doing the job (as if that'd work...). during the enemies trying to look for you, one of them shoots a bird you were following, killing it and revealing their location. this is what sets you off, what makes you want to rebel against your (now former) teammates.


the level layouts and overall mechanics are very good, and it's fairly satisfying to watch the timer decrease as you obliterate a group of enemies with one explosive barrel. the levels encourage you to form your own paths, and it shows them after the level, using the built-in Summary system. you can review what you could have done better, what enemies you killed and where, and how you killed them too.

maybe on one level, you're stuck trying to get a S rank? finish the level, review it, adjust your plan, try again. rinse and repeat. not to mention, you can quickly restart; your cursor is locked to the center of the screen when not paused, and the try again button is in the center too. kind of like Balatro's quick restart mechanic; hold R to start a new run immediately.

and also, the time-attack gameplay. for every level, there's a timer that increases; if it hits the maximum, you fail and must restart. there's ways to decrease the timer, mostly revolving around killing enemies in different ways, regular kills shave off 0.5s, chains 1.0s, et cetera. heck, if you're fast enough and you kill enough, you can actually get a negative score too.


only real issues i have with the game have been already said, but i'll repeat them here for clarity;

1) guns don't feel that punchy
for example, the pistol - there's not much to be said about the bass-y(ish) sound of a gunshot, as it's kind of non-existent for the pistol

2) level padding is kind of boring
having to go back and do challenges to unlock new levels is kind of a meh for me, i'd much rather just have them unlock after i finish a preceding level - but hey, to each their own, i guess?


i gotta say, IAYB is an amazing game, and a breath of fresh air when it comes to modern FPS games. whether it be the artstyle, mechanics, or the storyline, i absolutely love it.

in my opinion, ignore the reviews talking about bugs. this game is a masterpiece, and brainwash gang really cooked when making this. from the storyline, to the soundtrack, hell, even to the artstyle, this game is amazing.

if you can, get it. this game is phenomenal and deserves the ratings it's gotten.
