Star Wars is a franchise that lends itself to many genres due to its content and themes. Real Time Strategy seems like a natural fit, after all it has War in the name and RTS games tend to focus around conflict. However we have something truly special with this game, in fact I’ve come to love many other RTS games over the years but none have ever replaced this game as my absolute favorite RTS.

This game by default has two diverse and unique factions with a third added on later as DLC forming a truly unique trinity of gameplay with each group bringing their own playstyle and mechanics. Each team has unique hero’s and units and technology to make them feel grounded in the Star Wars universe but also balanced in regards to gameplay.

The foucus for the game is essentially controlling the vast Star Wars universe and all your favorite planets are included for you to conquer, liberate or extort. Controlling hyperlanes and systems to gain resources to help you expand your factions dominance across the stars.

Invading a planet consist of two phases the first being space combat. This is the most enjoyable aspect of the game by far. You’ll never grow tired of bringing a star Destroyer out from hyper space to attack an enemy fleet or watching X-Wings fly in formation to intercept Tie Fighters so your Y-Wings can pull off a bombing run on an imperial cruiser. It really captures the feeling of the Star Wars universe and it’s truly enjoyable to engage in combat with other ships as your target individual components on them from Engines to Hanger Bays to disrupt the enemy in different ways.

The second phase is ground battle which for most hasn’t been the most enjoyable when compared to the games space battles but I think it’s truly an enjoyable part of the experience, each battlefield is unique and designed around the planet you are invading or defending and offers everything from difficult terrain or maybe native inhabitants to help or fight against you. Slowly conquer different command points to call in reinforcements and secure the area entirely. The unites like with space range and differe with each faction bringing different gameplay mechanics and strategies to the player.

Both of these phases also allow you to enjoy everything in a cinematic mode that mimics the films so you can enjoy your AT-ATs as they stomp around planet side or maybe get a good look at Boba Fett’s Slave 1 unleashing a Sonic Imploder into a group of A-Wings, so satisfying by the way.

Different campaigns add more of a narrative drive experience while Galactic Conquest is your Sand-Box to the Star Wars galaxy.

Couple all that with the sound design of an E-11 or AT-ST walking around with the beautiful Star Wars Score we have come to love and you really have yourself a complete package for not only one of the best RTS games Avalible but also one of the best Star Wars Games ever made.

All in all it’s a fantastic game with a great community that loves and supports it. Some Mods for this game completely change it into a Clone Wars game and some just add more units to enhance the experience, the range is very impressive and shows just how much the community enjoys this game.

If you love Star Wars and RTS games you have no reason not to own this game.
But this is just my opinion, regardless I hope you give this classic a chance.
