kathy rain is an unlikable person and kind of a boring protagonist. you can stop reading here and that would be enough.

the game starts off with a dreamcatcher in your face right in the opening scene. your mother is "crazy" so you had her forcefully institutionalized. your dad is a deadbeat who can die but it's ok because he's weally sowwy at the very end. you're in college apparently supporting yourself but you don't go to your classes and you're a slob and you've been smoking since you were twelve and had an ABORTION and you ride a motorcycle and SMOKE did you mention you smoke enough yet you're so so so edgy. but actually you're super torn up inside about it aw he would've been five :((( how could you you monster. you try to shove it in your religious roommate's face but She's Sensible and Reasonable even though she's very disappointed in you :( a nice guy cop asks you on a date which is worth a 0 rating on its own. also there's a Special boy who plays a surprising role you will never ever ever guess if you're at all familiar with how disability is presented in media lol. the fact this game is supposed to be set in the 90s is not an excuse this ♥♥♥♥ was released in 2019. be better.

the "mystery" is a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dragging your ass all over the place because there's an x in location z that you need for y in location alpha to get to place gamma to get information you bring back to location z which i'm aware is a staple of the point and click. but does everything need to have a ten second animation too. also sometimes a ♥♥♥♥♥ will kill you and you just have to guess how to say the same thing in the right way - the puzzles are either very easy or tedious. the main story could have been cool but it's not even interesting religious mysticism or tripping it's just aahh so spooky sigils!!! distorted voice!!! SUICIDE!! static and corpses aaaaaah!!! vegetative state!! hallucinations!! WHEELCHAIR!! boring and lazy.

the only reason i have so many hours in this is because i fell asleep playing it. i know we're hard up for women-led games but save your money fr

in good conscience i cannot recommend this game to anyone due to the intensely predatory model of play: microtransaction and FOMO predation out the wazoo, almost mobile game ads bad. there's literally an option to watch advertisements in the menu in-game for a laughably minuscule amount of basic currency as a reward.

the game also frequently has bugs. some are long-known merely annoying bugs - sometimes one of the basic grind currency shops screws up and wipes your currency amount + makes nothing selectable in the store, but it's just a graphical glitch that fixes eventually. you get notifications after every game for the total amount of gold you've acquired since opening the game, which is annoying on its own but also disappointing to realize as a new player. there have also been a few bugs i've run into that require force-closing the application entirely.

it's fun and i'll probably keep playing it but man. come on.

a simple, lovely story told through enjoyable gameplay and gentle music, with a very cool timelapse saving feature built-in. the game is chill, beautiful, and sweet without overstaying its welcome - i got invested in the character just from interacting with their things and reading their captions to photos, and the ending even got me a little choked up. brilliant concept and execution.

it was fun and i only have good things to say about my experience. thank you!
