I've always just judged based on what I got to play by the end of the year. But by that note I purposely avoided a lot of the big releases, that or I bought them and never got the chance to actually play em.
My GOTY of 2014, based on what I actually got to play, Shadows or Mordor or Alien Isolation.

Well, I haven't played enough Endless Legend or Dragon Age Inquisition yet to say. They are both very promising. Those aside I am quite fond of Tropico 5. I wish it did a little more with the different eras but its a fun city builder that I come back to often. Dead State is a pretty compelling RPG if you aren't sick of zombie games and are forgiving of its bugs and low production values. The latest Wolfenstein was a very satisfying experience but its fairly short.

I just got a set of Astro A50's as headphones. Now, I am just waiting for an external soundcard to come in (Since I game on a laptop, my system doesn't have a Optical IN connector to get 5.1 or 7.1 surround, so I need an external card) in order for them to work perfectly. Once I get it, it's game on!

I read your review on Gamespot of Shogun 2 and I have to say that I am very impressed. You nailed all of the points which a gamer would need to make an informed decision on whether this is a buy / not buy game. Frankly, I never would have thought that this type of game would interest me, but it sounds like it has a lot going for it and is something I would most likely enjoy. Add to that the fact that the reviews of it have been very favorable, and I am thinking that it is something that I am going to have to check out.
