I got this game for free last week (the only reason I was willing to pull the trigger and get it finally) but this just might be the game that gets me to move on from Left 4 Dead 2! It is the warhammer fantasy universe, so not a replacement for the same "feel" of action present in Warhammer Space Marine, but the melee combat is absolutely on point.

On lowest difficulty, you can absolutely cut down the hoards with pretty much any weapon. On the next difficulty level up, you want human friends or a really good strategy to keep yourself from being overcome. Definitely learn to use melee weapons even if your character is based on ranged weapons. Learn to parry and block, it's there for a reason.

You get to pick different characters but they each have a skill tree of maybe 8 unlocks spaced 5 levels apart, where you can pick one of three options at each point, and change them whenever you want. Characters also have a progression where you unlock 3 different variants of each character that can all use the same weapons you collect or craft, but have different ultimate abilities, different passive abilities, and different skill tree unlocks. You can make it to level 10 for one character about an hour or two and unlock all 3 free character variants for that category, plus unlock some really nice weapons, or get enough useless weapons to dismantle them for crafting materials to build your own.

On crafting, every weapon category (think, single-shot crossbow vs repeating crossbow, short sword vs greatsword vs dual swords, etc) has a blueprint you use to craft a better version, and each blueprint always has the same crafting recipe. So when you first start the game you can spend XY materials and craft a power level 5 sword, but an hour later you could spend the same XY materials and get a power level 75 sword. This means if you like one particular weapon, at any time (before a match, while in the lobby) you can always dismantle a few other weapons that build up over time and make a new version of your favorite that will probably be a higher level than anything else in your inventory! I love it. You also collect powders that use can use separately to give status effects or special effects to the weapons. Primary and secondary weapons are unique to each row of characters, while the jewelry/misc equipment can be equipped to any character you unlock. The bots in your parts use your loadout, I think, so it's worth playing with the other characters long enough to get them some high level weapons and figure out which you think are the most useful to have on your team, or play as yourself. They are all immensely satisfying to play, even the basic guy with the hammer in the intro mission!

I love this game. If you want a good co-op game that plays like Left 4 Dead 2, this could be the game for you!
