I got a lot more hours out of it than I expected. It's fun, and the end game has a little bit of play time in it as you learn to tune your ship and take out other civilisations with ease.

I enjoyed it at first, and it's an impressive game, but the "humour" started to annoy me after a while, enough to put it down after 2 hours and not pick it back up. Whoever wrote it is just kind of an a**hole.

This developer understands the concept of flow better than pretty much anyone out there. This game is hard, satisfying, and really easy to play for short stretches and keep coming back to.

Early Access Review
This is the first game in 15 years that I've actively fantasized about when I'm not playing it. It's a game for people who like mystery, discovery, beauty, fear, and cosy spaces.

The building is creative without being time-consuming. The underwater landscapes are varied and interesting. Succeeding takes planning and care.

After I finished the early access content I missed the feeling of adventure so much that I took up solo wilderness camping to try and recapture it.

Anyway, buy this game.

A word on early access: it's slated for release in 3 months. It's totally playable, and you can believe every good word you read, but there are a few bugs here and there and the story's ending isn't quite in place yet. I do have 67 hours on record though, which is exploring and playing the story that's in place right now. I accumulated most of that 67 hours in just one week. So, your call!

Early Access Review
At the beginning you’re alone, with nothing but a broken spaceship. You beam down to the planet below you and find it wanting. Empty but for roving monsters and scarce resources. If you dig, you might find the ruins of previous civilizations. Small relics, out of place.

Gather resources, push on. Enjoy the music. Eventually on some other planet, somewhere in the black, you’ll find a community of strange sentient creatures. Silent, aimless, walking back and forward at random. If you speak to them, they bark something pithy. Shopkeepers have the most life. If you approach their stores they come running like children defending a favourite toy on the other side of a room.

I want to be in this universe so badly. It’s a universe that has endless opportunity for exploration and gathering and building and music and is so full of sadness. Civilizations spread thin across the galaxy. Nothing left to say to one another. Nothing left to do.

It’s peaceful. Come and play.

If you liked Freelancer, you'll probably enjoy this. It's not quite as good, but it's good enough. Oh... except for the dialogue. The writing is clunky and the voice acting is pretty amateur. Still, I'm enjoying myself.
