It's hard to talk about Elden Ring without singing all of its praises that you have likely heard before. Yes, it might just be the best open world we have ever seen. That's not necessarily because it's breaking new ground, but instead because it's the one of the most faithful presentations of the genre to this day.

What so many open-world games fall short of is not actually taking advantage of what the genre has to offer. More often than not, open worlds are empty, lack artistic direction, and are littered with uninspired copy-pasted challenges sprinkled throughout the map. Elden Ring manages to eloquently avoid all of these cliches. Combined with honing its studio's decade-plus years of experience with the soulsborne genre, FromSoft has created one of the most sprawling, rich, and imaginative open worlds that gaming has ever seen.

Every area is unique, with bountiful secrets hidden in nearly every nook and cranny. For the most part, its entirely up to the player to be thorough in finding these. With little to no direction of what to do built into the game, every discovery feels earned and intimate. The same can also be said for the story, which is completely non-linear. Players will find tidbits of lore in text, dialogue, and visual storytelling and then have to piece them together to get a picture of whats happening. Maybe this sounds tedious, and in some ways it is. In a lot of ways it makes the story feel confusing, and many players will likely have either not found key plot points, or have it go completely over their head. That's a real shame, as the story to Elden Ring is simply wonderful. With that said, however, even the presentation of this is completely in-line with the context of the world. In a world where the land is shattered, stitched together, and shattered again, it just feels right to have the story available in this manner. On top of that, it feels rewarding. Like a detective looking through a crime scene, solving the mystery of the Lands Between feels in your face while remaining out of your grasp.

As a final note, I also want to say that unfortunately, the game is not perfect. For the most part, enemies are diverse in both their moveset and design, but Elden Ring is not without its blunders. More-so than any other soulsborne game, a lot of enemies have unfair, one-shot moves that left me feeling cheated. Now let's get it straight, every FromSoft game is hard. Honestly, I would argue that Sekiro is still harder, but it never felt unfair like Elden Ring does. As well, online play is honestly lacking, with the changes to invasions being for the worse, in my opinion. Other than that, though, you won't see me complaining about the game. Every hour was an hour well spent, and it's one of the few games that I'd argue is worth even more than its $80 price tag.

Very excited to see what FromSoft comes up with next.

Aside from clear pacing issues in the endgame, Psychonauts 2 does everything right. With refreshingly diverse sets of levels, characters, themes, ideas, and even art style, Psychonauts 2 goes above and beyond in the presentation of all of them. It's unfortunate that it ends on a somewhat unsatisfying note, with strange plot twists and abrupt cutscenes. However, it's important to remember that the journey there was utter bliss and unlike any other. I fully recommend giving it a shot.

I've played the previous games, and thought they were great. This one seems like it can be great too, however the stealth is just absolutely horrible. Unbearably bad.
