I don't know if it's because I switched from Hurt Me Plenty to I'm Too Young To Die or if id Software got their ♥♥♥♥ together after part 1, but I enjoyed The Ancient Gods part 2 quite a bit up until the end.

Where the enemies introduced in part 1 were aneurysm inducing, the new enemies in part 2 were...actually quite fun. Even the zombies that buff enemies weren't even close to being as bad as the part 1 enemies.

The level design is much better too. Pretty much on par with the basegame's level design which, after Blood Swamps and The Holt, I'll take it. Encounters flowed very nicely, and the escalation encounters that replaced the secret encounters and slayer gates were a welcome and fun challenge.

The sentinel hammer is better than the crucible. It's fun, useful, and feels a lot fresher than 'sword that just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kills you in one hit.' I liked stunning whole groups of enemies after flame belching them to get back up to full armor. Very fun tool.

The final boss fight was less annoying than fighting a marauder and an improvement over part 1's final boss, but as mechanically uninteresting as it can be, I do miss the whole 'shoot at it till it dies' approach to bosses in DOOM games as opposed to having to play a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game of red-light-green-light.

The actual ending felt extremely abrupt and very unsatisfying. It just kinda...ends. Really interested in how they could possibly continue the series after this one beyond prequels (like with what they're doing with Dark Ages).

All in all, it's not perfect, but it is a vast improvement over part 1.

Changing my negative review to a positive one after my second playthrough. It's not a very *eager* thumbs up, but I definitely had a better time after my second go-around.

Part 1 of The Ancient Gods is a brutal 3 level dlc that feels like a trio of Master Levels. It naturally continues the base game's story, and has the Slayer overcome immense challenges. It's a dlc that after the first level literally gets worse as you play through it, ending on a level that story-wise is amazing, level-wise is kinda trash. Each of the 3 levels feel almost as long as 2 basegame levels, which is fine and helps make up for the fact that there's only 3 levels.

The UAC Atlantica is a top 10 DOOM Eternal level, personally. The encounters were the right balance between challenging and fun, (most of) the level design is exquisite, the music track is one my favorite pieces of DOOM music ever, and the setting of an ocean base in the rain was phenomenal. The new enemy introduced, the sentries, are the least annoying enemy this dlc adds, and aren't too terribly annoying in this level. Only real negative I have about this level is some of the level design (most egregiously those parts where you have to wait for a storage container makes its way to you so you can jump onto them) isn't the best to navigate. Still, I'd say it's a 10/10 level regardless.

Blood Swamps wasn't as bad as it was on my first playthrough. The encounters do get less fun as you go through it, but thankfully hasn't reached the Bad zone. Another great music track and incredible art direction as well. That said, the level has some things that I really could have done without. Firstly, the fog section sucked. Double sucks cuz the level introduces and invisible varient of the whiplashes. It also introduces a giant version of those tentacle things, as well as my least favorite enemy in all of DOOM...the spirits. The spirits well possess an enemy, make them immune to stagger and stun, unable to have their weak points taken out (except maybe the cyber mancubus's armor though I can't remember), as well as make them significantly faster and tougher. Once you kill a possessed enemy, you need to use the plasma gun's microwave beam attachment (which is the worst weapon attachment in the game), and ghost bust them, otherwise they'll possess another enemy and you'll have to do it again. I hate them with all of my heart. Blood Swamps' boss fight is also kind of trash and it's not even the worst boss fight in the dlc. Definitely a strong 7/10 level all things considered.

The final level, The Holt, is my least favorite level in all of DOOM Eternal. I'll start with the good things this level does. First of all, it looks incredible. Definitely the best looking level in the dlc. The music, while the weakest of the level music in this dlc, is still great and goes hard. Story and writing-wise I loved it. The nice little interaction with the ARC intern (aka the GOAT himself), bringing back Vega, and the kick ass cliffhanger are all well done. And the level starts out pretty fun. But once you reach about the halfway point, it's all downhill. First off, the blood maykrs are another annoying enemy with YET ANOTHER waiting game fighting strat (which has gotten old and isn't even the last time DOOM Eternal pulls that ♥♥♥♥), there's a couple arenas where it feels like the game is just throwing a bunch of random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at you with no ryhme reason or rhythm (which also sums up my feelings on most of the secret encounters in the dlc), and then there's the final boss. The final boss is an unsatisfying slog, and is the worst id Software final boss since Shub in Quake 1. It brings down what was could've been just a pretty mid level to a VERY mid (almost trash) level. 4/10

The first two thirds of the dlc were actually enjoyable, which is why I'm setting my review to positive, but good lord that last level was a complete mess. It's a miracle the whole dlc wasn't a complete mess seeing how they had to work through a time limit, a pandemic, and the consequences of them mistreating Mick Gordon.

the fact that you get a chainsaw leg and can gain another one and then 2 chainsaw arms is by itself enough justification to buy this at full price

Can you believe that this game was gonna follow the trend of fps games being boring muddy brown military shooters? Glad that id remembered who they are and what they used to be.

hey now that Activision (and by extension Ravensoftware) is owned by Microsoft now, maybe Heretic II can be put onto digital storefronts now? maybe even a new Heretic/Hexen game? and while they're at it Wolfenstein 2009, too?
