that having a system with varying bases is sometimes more sensible because you don't face exponential growth, and thus do not have difficulty telling lengths which are in between two units of measure

in the metric measuring system the ascent to meter (centimeter, decimeter, meter)is a bowed, exponential curve, while in the american system the ascent to yard (inch, foot, yard) is basically a line. the dependence on base 10 causes centi and decimeter to be too small compared to a meter.
