Enjoying it so far. But I do have my good takeaways and some bad.

PROS :
  • Plays smoother than 2018 in some ways. Seems the AI is a little smarter with finding gaps and knowing where to go in open space, but you still get things like the AI returning kicks and running the sideline at like the 12 yard line for no reason.
  • Expanded playbooks (defensively at least). The defensive playbook is much larger with more options for different blitzes and zone variations, though the offensive playbooks look to be almost untouched for the most part.
  • More expansive franchise mode. This seemed to be a main focus and it definitely adds more replay value as you can now train your teams, use scouting more effectively, upgrade your stadiums and concessions, and boost morale for your team by winning games.
CONS:
  • A lot of the same UI and interface. I mean I don't expect too much difference, but having the same title screen picture and having everything in pretty much the same place reminds me of buying the latest Madden rip-off.
  • Gameplay is improved, but not by much. As I said, the game runs smoother than 18 but does still have a lot of the same problems with receivers catching balls when they're WIDE open, people kind of fading through or around blockers, and the AI just overall not generally making great decisions. And not to mention when a receiver will literally DUCK under the ball when they're wide open standing still; little frustrating things like that can make it a serious pain at times. It's a fun game but needs work to compete with Madden's pick up and play appeal.
  • The graphics. See I'm generally not someone who harps on about a game looking triple-A tier as I still enjoy many older games with dated graphics, but Axis 2019 looks like a PS2 game, and not even a great looking PS2 game at that. If this game looked even vaguely like Madden 2009 then it would definitely be more appealing for people to try. But to really love Axis 2019 you have to LOVE the game of football and be able to forgive it's downfalls.
  • Lack of online multiplayer. This is really the big difference in me playing 30 hours of this game from playing 500. Sure I do enjoy the immersion of the franchise mode and coaching my team, but eventually you want to play a real person to test your skills. Even if I had to forward my ports or some complex ♥♥♥♥, it'd still be better than hoping one of my uninterested friends would try and finish an entire game with me. It would seriously take the game from a distraction to something that everyone would play.

7/10
