Lemma 1.7. Let S be a non-empty set, and let f : S → P(S) be a function. Then f cannot
be surjective.
Proof. Suppose for a contradiction that f is surjective, and let X = {s ∈ S | s /∈ f(s)}.
Then X ∈ P(S), so that X = f(x) for some x ∈ S since f is surjective. This gives the
nonsensical conclusion that x ∈ X if and only if x /∈ f(x).
