17 hours in, and I can't stop playing, or yapping about how impressed I am with DA:tV
Below is my long, personal **SPOILER FREE** perspective on the game so far, broken into categories:

PERFORMANCE: 9/10
The game looks beautiful, performs very well at (near) max graphics, and I've experienced no crashes. There are more settings to customize the look and feel of various game elements than I've ever seen in another title. Some areas are more demanding and I will say I'm disappointed that my beast of a PC can't run the game with ray tracing despite being way over the requirements, so I hope that gets optimized in the future. In terms of bugs/glitches, I've encountered nothing notable or immersion breaking so far. Player movement is a little janky and lip syncing is not great, but overall things are polished.

SOUND/MUSIC: 7/10
The sound effects are extremely satisfying and fitting, while the music I feel is decent, but nothing very special. This is pretty typical for AAA titles, so I don't mind that it's just fine and not mesmerizing, but it would've been nice to have something similar to DA:O.

GRAPHICS/VISUALS: 10/10
As noted, the game is absolutely breathtaking - everything from the atmosphere to the lighting, the cosmetic design to the hair.. even the art style. It all looks so incredible. While I don't love the modernized HUD/UI they started with in DA2, I admire the consistency and it doesn't break my immersion. I just miss the DA:O style menus and wish they had brought a little more of that dark, old school fantasy style back. Otherwise, the game really is stunning - so much that I find myself using photo mode more often than I have in any game.

COMBAT/SKILL SYSTEM: 9/10
This was an area that concerned me when watching gameplay before release, because it almost looked linear and boring in a similar fashion to other RPGs. Inquisition's traditionally flavored combat doesn't really hold up as being too interesting these days, so I'm happy to report that the way they've overhauled the combat/gear systems are nothing short of f***ng awesome. As an example, I love to play as a mage in pretty much any fantasy RPG, especially Dragon Age, but it never really evolved significantly after DA:O's "hold attack to use [weapon type], use abilities" system, which led to the same linear combat loop. In DA:tV, playing as a mage now feels like a simple yet fun and effective multi-tool. Gone are the days of the stave restriction - your abilities and passives still exist, however you now wield a mageblade, an orb, and a stave. You can switch on the fly from stave (stronger, more range) to mageblade + orb (faster, less range, more stagger) and you'll quickly start to learn when to use which mode. Your party members now have "prime and detonate" abilities, which means one can use an ability to apply an affect, while the other can detonate with their ability. This makes for more interesting and fresh combat, although it does remove the traditional strategy element of switching to party members and controlling their moves, which some may not like, but I personally love. Overall, the combat system/animations are fun and avoid those dull moments that make you want to shut down other RPGs you feel like you've played a million times over.

STORY/WRITING: 7/10 **Unfinished
This is the area I feel the game falls a little more short so far. The story seems very "been there done that" just with its own characters and nuances. The characters/party members in the game are actually pretty interesting which I love, and the dialogue isn't really that bad like others have claimed, however I just wish there were more wow factors and plot twists. I have NOT completed the story and will come back to edit this later if my feelings change.

CHARACTER CREATION/CUSTOMIZATION: 8/10
A typical staple for the DA series, the DA:tV creator is pretty good. Not really great, definitely not bad.. just pretty good. The inclusion of a lot of black hairstyles and other alternative options (vitiligo for example) was awesome, and the hair itself is probably the best I've ever seen in a video game besides Baldur's Gate 3. In terms of cosmetics and customization, the ability to transmogrify is really cool, and there are lots of interesting armors/weapons to choose from that are reminiscent of Dark Souls/Elden Ring. I would've liked to see a little more detail control in the creator, and more hair options that don't make you look like an Oblivion NPC with a receding hairline.

CHARACTERS: 6/10
Characters like Neve, who is notably reminiscent of the dark/sassy DA:O Morrigan, make Dragon Age what it is. On the flip side, you have characters like Bellara who had potential to be interesting, but the modernization of the dialogue sort of ruined her for me, turning her into the nerdy sidekick who hacks the main frame and struggles with insecurity. The modern tropes pull away from Dragon Age's dark fantasy elements, and it makes me miss the gritty, often crucial dialogue from DA:O. Dialogue and other decisions feel much less impactful. The situation at hand is intense, borderline toxic. The HRification of this definitely made the experience feel less genhuine.

OVERALL SCORE: 8/10
DA: Veilguard is a consistently fun, interesting and gorgeous fantasy RPG (maybe more action RPG) that was absolutely worth the wait. While the general dialogue, American accent voice acting and slightly lackluster story are a bit less engaging than I'd like, the combat and questing make it all worth the money and time. I find myself not wanting to put the game down each time I open it up, which is extremely rare for me these days at my big age of 27, who's pretty much seen/played it all. There's definitely replayability - maybe not as much as DA:O, but it's there. I wish they had played it less safe and went back to a more dark, gritty, tensely played RPG that didn't try as hard to be a cinematic masterpiece but I don't regret buying it at all and I'm excited to see what content we get in the future. I highly recommend it to past and new DA fans.

This game is NOT playable. A patch was released today (10/5) that renders is unable to even move past the shader compiling screen before crashing. DO NOT waste your money until this is fixed - otherwise, it would be completely worth it.

EDIT: Running the game with -dx11 helped all the crashing after the latest patch. I also ran into a major issue where I couldn't progress the game further past the Ashley/Chris Dollhouse area and had to literally edit my own save file with a hex editor. Remember when games worked on release and didn't require you to be a pseudo engineer to fix?!

For the price, this cozy game is perfect for relaxing after some PvP games (and building with your chat if you stream.) However, there are some changes I'd really like to see come over time:

1. A bit more life ie. more animals, humans. The game feels a little lifeless.
2. More tools/a little more control over details of your glade
3. An optional mode with really simple objectives and rewards to make it playable over time. Not a city builder, just the option to play a mode where we hit randomly generated goals & have a purpose.
4. New atmospheres - spooky woods, holiday, etc

Overall I think the game is super cute, and has gorgeous lighting. A tiny bit of a letdown as I thought we would get more from the full release, but still very cute' You can tell the devs really love this game.

First off, for anyone who hasn't played a soul or souls-like game (Bloodborne, Elden Ring) but wants to get into them, this game is a perfect introduction without the insane difficulty or frustration. For people who liked Souls games, Elden Ring or Bloodborne and want a new experience in the genre, definitely give this one a try.

I started playing Elden Ring but was a little overwhelmed with the complete lack of guidance. difficulty right off the bat, and varying amount of class options — so I came back to LoP, and I feel more than prepared to go back and enjoy a genuine FromSoftware experience.

LoP may be a lot simpler, but don't let it fool you; everything from the legion mechanics to the weapon assembly is simple yet effective and fun, and makes grinding worth the effort.

This game can be super fun with friends and very interactive for everyone, but on the flipside games are EXTREMELY slow and un-interactive sometimes, compared to even my longest DBD matches. The Dollmaster specifically is a frustrating killer who can straight up just hide all game and then get rage/ez down people. It's honestly so boring to play against and going in as a solo teen isn't really that fun either when you get matches like that.

Hellbent should definitely consider different ways to tweak matches into being shorter before the game goes into full release.. otherwise my fear is that queue times and extremely long, dull matches will push players away.

EDIT: Queue times have definitely gotten better early in the day and sporadically later on which is great! Now it would be great to see them focus on balancing Wart and Dollmaster to better fit into the game like Werewolf. Maybe uhhh where Wart doesn't have a shield constantly that makes it impossible to play the game in a fun and interactive way.

For an early access game, I'm so impressed with how polished and well-thought out V Rising is.

To be transparent, I don't typically enjoy games in this general genre, I mostly play regular RPGs. I decided to just throw down the $20 for this game and I don't regret it one bit. The game is a heavier and heavier grind as you progress of course, however the devs gave us a great balance of guidance vs. figuring out the next steps on our own. I love that I always have an objective to work towards but I can easily do things my own way too!

Below are some of the pros and ♥♥♥♥ I've experienced after spending 25 hours with V Rising:

PROS:

- Perfect amount of grind (just enough to be satisfying but not make me give up)
- Easy to get into, hard to master
- Beautiful and unique environment/game mechanics
- Combat is interesting and often rewarding
- Character design is a nice touch
- PvE servers are a blast if you like teamwork
- The game overall does NOT feel like early access. It's very polished
- Level is not based on experience but equipment you carry, which gives incentive to immediately better your gear and not be forced to grind out the game in a fully linear way to get to [insert level]
- The map tells you where you can farm certain materials if you've discovered that area

♥♥♥♥:

- By far the biggest one is that you can't teleport with materials. Like.. why?! If you're far from your base and die, you lose all your loot and now you're stuck wasting time going all the way back there, retrieving it, and going all the way back to your base. Going to farm certain materials is such a drag without being able to head back to your base via waypoints.
- Not enough waypoints to even make the above make sense. IMO there should be more waypoints that activate/ as you increase your gear level and can only be accessed by [x] level or above.
- PvP lock is disabled far too early for new players to enjoy PvP. I had to switch and start over because it was a pretty toxic server.
- Crafting actions using stations like the Sawmill, Forge, etc take a bit too long. I would love to see these times cut down by at least 30-40%
- This may be a hot take, but the durability mechanic has either gotta go, or be reworked. I would much rather have a simple linear method to refresh the durability of my gear than have to gather materials to do it all over again. Devs, please consider something like a workbench specific to resetting durability that doesn't force you to go farm just for the sake of your temporary gear

Strengths:

— Great map design, immersive atmosphere
— Great/interesting killer design
— Fun to play with friends casually
— Good value for the low $5 price tag
— Great balance of humor and horror
— Random item locations keeps things fresh

Areas of opportunity:

— AI is very predictable and can basically be looped around any object ie lockers, tables, etc. You can easily just run the Lunch Lady in the same spot, have your friends collect the keys and answers, then dip out
— Games tend to run way too long, almost 40 minutes when you're first learning
— Survivor design could use some customization
— Seeing the location of downed teammates would cut time in game
— Game would strongly benefit from a simple perk system, or something similar that spiced up gameplay
