ok im just gonna play out the next 6 months and then im done. this was the worst campaign i have ever played in this game's history. this was worse than shadowkeep. this was nothing, this was a nothing campaign. this was little more than seasonal content from years like lightfall and the final shape. and it really stings because of how much of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sellout this star wars ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is. i was honestly holding out my negativity til i saw the actual quality of what was being put out, but now that i have, im way more pissed off about this than i would have if the campaign was just good. unless bungie shows something off in spring of 2026 that absolutely blows my ♥♥♥♥ off and makes me believe in this game's future, i'm bagging my 4000 wasted hours in this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game, not buying next year, uninstalling, and quitting forever. what an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ embarrassment. i dont care if the sony acquisition potentially means a bigger budget and higher effort, i'm not spending another 2 years 'potential man'ing myself into wasting my time on this pile of ♥♥♥♥.

most of the weapons are cool and fun. the heat mechanic basically gives every weapon a modified auto-loading holster, the heavy sniper rifle is like the crossbow turned up to 11, and service of luzaku is one of the most fun exotics in the game, especially when paired with swarmers. the fun and effectiveness of the new weapons are really the only positive takeaway from this. although the praxic blade is getting old quick.

this was actually really good. negative reviews are probably about the state of the game this expansion put it in, and that's very valid because the game is currently in the worst state it's ever been in. at least since i started playing. but if we're just looking at the campaign of the edge of fate itself, it's honestly really good. the story is really great and engrossing, lodi is the best character theyve come up with in years, the environments and missions are fun and memorable (im one of the apparently few who actually really liked matterspark, the only gimmick i didnt enjoy was the teleporting void cannons), i think when people have the opportunity to look back on this with hindsight theyll give it the same reverence and classic status that campaigns like beyond light and witch queen are given. really great campaign, and again, this review is just about the campaign

edit: in bilewater proper now and i take back everything good i said about this game ♥♥♥♥ you team cherry
the idea that these devs actually had fun making this game tells me they must all have fetishes for getting kicked in the balls

edit edit: it just gets worse and worse as you get to the true ending (no the existence of a true ending is not a spoiler suck my balls) this game is not fun

(SAFE AND SPOILERLESS)
beat it. 20 hours, beat the final boss on my first try (trust (seriously)), aaaand man this this is a mixed bag. there is no relaxing in this game. everything is at a 10 from start (maybe with the exception of like the first 2 or 3 areas) to finish. there are entire mainline souls games that are less consistently brutal, unforgiving, and demanding than this. by the end of it i found that this mostly works to its advantage. there's something satisfying about constantly having to claw your way through every inch up to the top of pharloom, but man does it get exhausting. hollow knight was for sure challenging but there were plenty of moments of downtime between the chaos that let you just breathe for a little while. this game demands you hold your breath and doesn't let you exhale until you see the end credits. and yes, this game is worse than hollow knight. for a lot of reasons. least of which the poor balancing. this isn't a bad game (i'll get into the positives later) but, given that hollow knight is essentially perfect, anything less than perfection would make it inferior. not that it's fair to expect perfection. i wasn't. what blindsided me is that team cherry seems to have almost entirely thrown away all the good habits and lessons they learned from designing and structuring hallownest. i'll just go ahead and echo what everyone else is saying. team cherry really needed to lay off the 'let this thing do two masks of damage' button. regular ass non boss enemies should not be doing two masks of damage under any circumstances until at least like, idk, blasted steps. maybe bellhart at the earliest. and why the hell would you make certain death pits/contact death pits do two masks of damage? why make platforming, one of the things that made hollow knight such an incredible experience, an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nightmare to have to deal with? and my god, this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stingy with the mask shards. i didnt get a sixth mask until right before act 2, and i STILL havent found enough to make a seventh. apparently you can have 10 masks in total in this game. where the ♥♥♥♥ are they?? but god forbid i not be constantly showered with the stupid silk extender pickups. there are like 3 incredibly simple changes that would have made this game so much better, but these aggravating, nagging things poisoned the ENTIRE playthrough. getting back into the whole 'moments of respite' thing i was talking about earlier. hollow knight had lots of these. not just dirtmouth. there were a lot of locations, places to see, fun little minigames, homes away from home, places full of life and vendors and things to do all around the world map. eventually hallownest just feels like home. by the time you finish the game the whole place feels like walking around in your backyard. deepnest is basically the only exception to this, which is by design. my last review essentially posited that this entire game is deepnest, and now that i'm finally finished with it, i can stand by that even moreso. nowhere feels like home in this game. everywhere feels like stepping out into no man's land, where 2 or 3 imperfect moves will send you back to the last bench you sat at. not even bone bottom feels like home. it's actually pathetic. there is one interior location and one or two people to talk to. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bellhart is more robust and full of life than this game's dirtmouth equivalent. so after bashing the everloving ♥♥♥♥ out of this game and slapping the "inferior younger sibling" label on it, why do i still recommend it? well, ive only looked at the negatives so far. (almost) everything that was good about hollow knight, this game succeeds at in similar measure. the art, score, and sound design are, of course, absolutely gorgeous. once you fill out your movement kit, traversing feels amazing (if only the world you were forced to traverse through didn't feel like path of pain lite). combat feels incredible (if only half the enemies and bosses weren't designed like you asked for a challenge run (see how it's difficult to compliment this game without ten different asterisks?)), with some phenomenally designed bosses (wish there were more of em though, this game is lacking in content in comparison to HK in a lot of ways) and i imagine it's only going to feel better as i spend more time with it. and yes, i do plan on playing this game a lot more. i'm kind of a masochist. it's impossible to play games like these and soulslikes without enjoying pain at least a little. or at the very least being content with enduring the pain for the payoff of victory at the end of it all. i dont wanna complain about the narrative (i feel positively about it, but much like many other things in this game, it pales in comparison to HK) or certain other things in regards to the world as a whole because i haven't seen everything there is to see. i can only really harp on what it was like to play the game at base, and the experience of going from start to finish. i would recommend this to veterans of HK and action platformers, cause it's pretty much the only group of people that's even going to be able to claw their way to the finish without chucking their controller at their monitor with the force of an MLB pitcher. for those people, people who know they're going to be very good at this game by the end of it, i think they'll find the experience very worthwhile and satisfying as a whole. but if you're not prepared for your hands to hurt over the grueling course of mastering this thing for 20-30 hours, maybe try some simpler and more forgiving games of this genre first.

tldr, 40% of the time, incredibly satisfying with a magical flow state in only the way its predecessor was. mind numbingly aggravating and stress-headache-inducing the other 60%.
