I'm pretty disappointed, because this game had so much potential, but ultimately fell flat in nearly every area, except aesthetic.

Here are my problems with the gameplay:
1. For being a space combat game, the level designs and especially the flight system is somehow more vertical than any of the other aerial combat games I've played, which take place within the atmosphere of Earth or an Earth-like planet.
2. While there are some unique enemy types, and the game does a pretty decent job with timing enemy introductions, the differences aren't really drastic enough in most cases to make the combat any more interesting, save for one, which is essentially a mini-environment. This is pretty much the only enemy type I've had fun fighting, and also my only source of excitement in this game.
3. Save for one exception, nearly all of the combat in this game is just some combination of drift, shoot, drift, shoot, drift, shoot, over and over until you kill everything that's shooting at you. The only nuance to this is that some enemies have shields, which are weak to a different weapon type, so you switch weapons to deal with them.
4. Every area you can visit is just an asteroid field with a slightly different layout, which just makes going to a system you've already been to for a side mission exhausting.

The premise, theme, characters, etc. were all set up to be insanely cool and unique, but everything just kinda fell flat. It feels like someone was feeling especially creative and came up with a whole universe, made up of a bunch of cool concepts that they came up with, without considering how they would fit together, complete with a broad, overarching narrative. Aside from these things, it feels like everything else in this game was improvised as they went along.

Also, the music/atmosphere gets a solid "meh"/10.

In summary, the ship designs are cool, but the story is boring, the characters feel 2-dimensional, the scenery is pretty much copy-paste, and the combat feels like it's actively making me worse at playing games.

My interest in this game was piqued after playing Project Wingman, expecting an experience at least equal to, if not better, considering this game was made by a triple A studio. Honestly, save for a few missions, I loved this game. At least for the first 2/3 of the game, anyway.

The campaign's storytelling and momentum completely broke down pretty much immediately in the last 1/3 or so, destroying everything it built up to throughout the rest of the game. I won't spoil the plot points, but the final mission especially just felt rushed and tedious, with the fights pretty much almost entirely influenced by whether or not the game wants you to hit your opponents.

I can't really speak for the multiplayer as I didn't try it. The general gameplay feels good, so if you don't care about the campaign, it couldn't hurt to try, I suppose.

But if story IS what you're looking for, just play Project Wingman, if you haven't already. The game's story, pacing, music, etc. is leagues better, with the added benefit of supporting an indie dev that really deserves the support.
