Killed by my mutant evil twin. As far as I'm concerned, that's like a post-apocalyptic soap opera.

I give this 10 out of 10, which is coincidentally how many times out of 10 runs you will also die.

Edited on Feburary 1st, 2016:
Devs regularly update this game. I haven't played it a lot recently but have been reading/keeping up. It's a good roguelike to invest a little in. *nodnod*

Will keep this relatively short and sweet.

Pros:
* Excellent writing, best described as "abstract Victorian sea-horror"
* Reasonable as a rogue-lite if not using Merciful Mode
* Good atmosphere
* Interesting art--the maps and backgrounds are particularly lovely.
* Some gameplay tie-ins if you play the free browser game 'Fallen London'
* Good soundtrack

Cons:
* Pacing is dreadful.
* Needs a more in-depth trading system--trading system as it stands is meh, and it's not a good way to make money.
* Replay value mediocre--there's only so many quests and only so many plots
* Money (called Echoes) grinding is a must and is time-consuming, which takes away from the time you could be spending on the good stories in the game.

Overall--8.5/10, I deeply enjoy it. It has its flaws, but this is not a game I play for the mechanics. The mechanics function enough to let me enjoy the writing and atmosphere. Buy it if you're into reading, stories, and weird existential horror. Don't buy it if you're a gamer who tends to like more mechanics focused or statistics focused games--you would find it a let-down.

I debated for a bit whether or not to recommend the game. I decided to recommend it, but I thought I would leave some information so that others considering purchasing will understand what they are buying.

1) This game is a text-based "Choose Your Own Adventure" game. There is art (and I like the art) and music (and I like the music), but ultimately, it's about the choices you make.

2) The game is very short. It is completed in 6 turns. However, there are a variety of options to choose from. There are different endings, so choose wisely.

3) If you are looking for a more typical "rpg" experience, this is not for you. If you are looking for something fun, rather light, and enjoyable with friends, this is a good game to pick.

4) I recommend purchasing the game on sale. It is just a little too pricey at it's original price in my opinion, but nabbing it on sale is generally a good idea. I got it at a slight discount.

5) The game is turn-by-turn and is certainly not going to eat any significant amount of your time. If you just need something sort of light to play for ten minutes, this is a good game to pick up. If you are looking for a somewhat more serious game purchase, perhaps you should not buy this. I do not have a lot of time logged in at all, but I have already beat the game a few times.

6) The game, even though it is short, does have some replay value.

7) Ahem. Demon baby. That was unexpected. Especially when it stopped being a baby...

Ultimately, I recommend it. Just remember that this is not a typical gaming experience, and gamers who prefer more standard grinding/number crunching/tactics-style games might want to give this a pass. If you're the type of person to be fascinated by choices and options, to see how your choices affect others and endings, then you might like this.

Picked this up for approximately $4.

Pros:
* Cute art and cute humor.
* Each monster has their own name, stats, status updates (up to and including when they're gettin' it on with lovers!), and they can even have children.
* Interesting strategy trying to attact certain monsters (for example, demons and demi-humans don't like each other, so you might want to pick one over the other) to get a good mix.

Cons:
* Some element of luck involving when monsters will happen to be home during quests. It's totally possible to lose a quest because none of your monsters happen to be home.
* The game, at least for me, was hardest at the beginning, but when I managed to get my second story on my building, the game got easier.
* Some of the sound effects can be somewhat irritating.

Not bad for $4. If you're bored and want something cutesy to pass the time, I'd recommend this. If you're looking for anything remotely serious, give this a pass. This is just a simple kind of humorous fun.

So I just purchased this the other day. I thought I'd write up a review of it.

Pros:
* Old-school dungeon-crawl feel.
* Nice art.
* Neat little storyline.
* Turn-based combat, which makes strategy easier.
* Quite a bit of potential with skill training. Casters don't have to stay quite so "squishy," which has helped me in boss fights.

Cons:
* Combat can be a little repetitive.
* Minotaur minion seems a bit overpowered at the beginning, but he seems to balance out and be on par with other characters by around level 11.
* Slight issue with the save function--it doesn't automatically update and show me my new save. I have to hit "back," and it shows me the new save for exactly one second, so it's hard to confirm if I've saved the game unless I watch it like a hawk.

Additional: This is not a complex game. Some people might see that as a negative thing, but in this case, simple is better. The precept of getting out of the dungeon is straightforward. I have a few slight complaints, namely that I would dearly like to see some sort of enemy status bar so I know what debuffs I have put on them, but ultimately, if you're looking for an old rpg dungeon crawl game, for $5, this one isn't too shabby, not too shabby at all. I'd recommend it. It's actually a pretty good deal for only $5.

EDIT: This review has been edited to take into account the DLC: Reign of Giants.

I'd recommend this game. A few helpful pieces of information for those who like to read reviews before purchasing:

This game is singleplayer, and the devs have made it clear that multiplayer isn't going to happen. That being said, I'm intensely enjoying the game.

The tone is a survival-horror game. It's a rogue-like in terms of gameplay, trying to gain resources (which you may or may not know how to use) in order to prolong survival. You begin gameplay as the character Wilson, and there are more characters that you can unlock as you accumulate experience in the game. The other two playable characters are unlockable in Adventure mode, which is challenging...but worthwhile. (If I am right, there may be more characters added in the future). Different characters have different strengths and weaknesses, and I'm not going to offer any spoilers here in regards to that. This is one of those games that, if you try to wiki information to get better at it, can be ruined by knowing too much about the game when starting out.

The unknown, and the fear of it, is half the fun.

Survival is tracked in terms of Days, and those Days are divided into the daytime, evening, and nighttime. Seasons fluctuate as well. Worlds are somewhat randomly generated, although it is possible, when opening a new game, to change certain aspects of gameplay to make things easier or harder (such as creating more beefalo to hunt or making the game always during the summer). I feel that the game acheived a good balance between skill and luck for players to succeed at it.

The game also has a fabulous community, and man individuals create mods for the game. I've tried a few out and enjoyed them quite a bit.

My only real critique is that gameplay without RoG can become a touch repetitive due to character permadeath, as it means you need to start over completely when you die, so it does give that feel that you have to resource-grind. That feeling mostly goes away after the first 3 or 4 days of in-game play (which is maybe 10ish minutes in real time) when you can start to diversify out what you wish to create, so it's not too bad in that regard either; I've seen games that are much more vicious about resource-grinding.

Reign of Giants: (short note) It's possible currently to play the game with or without Reign of Giants. RoG introduced additional seasons, additional items, additional monsters (yes, giants!), and overall, has greatly increased the replay value of the game since I first wrote up the review. Honestly, I do not find the game repetitive to restart if you die if you're using RoG with your game. There are two more characters, one unlockable with accumulated EXP to my knowledge and the other unlockable under certain game conditions.
