This is quite possibly one of my favorite games ever. Period.

Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo is a beautiful masterpiece that weaves family trauma with unique artistic representations of grief, regret, sadness, and more. The writing often left me in tears, connecting parts of the story to things I could relate to. Nothing within this game is handled without care— everything put into it with intention. I actually recommend replaying once or twice (as of writing this review, I’ve played it twice!) to catch every detail you hadn’t been able to connect yet, as it often leads you with more context and makes it even more devastatingly emotional. All the characters left a lasting impression on me, making me struggle to put the game down at times— I grew connected to the world of Limbo and its inhabitants every passing (in game) day, really. Every part of this game is lovable, creating a charming experience for the player.

Aside from the amazing story, the gameplay is very fun and takes spins on previous mechanics from other games (such as Majora’s Mask! The use of the day cycle mechanic compliments the pacing of the plot). I loved how everything worked together and nothing ever felt out of place. The puzzles never had a huge difficulty curve and even if you got stuck you’d be able to collect enough hints to figure it out yourself. I enjoyed the side quests so much as they add some padding to the environment and timing of the plot. The game rarely struggled to load environments and is surprisingly one of the few games I’ve played with a near flawless performance especially within a 2.5D plane.

I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone. Even if you think it won’t be for you, give it a shot. Kulebra has something for everyone within its story.
