I wish there was a "neutral" option for reviews, but because it's still (in my opinion) a very fun game gameplay-wise, I'll have to give it a recommended.

After getting 100% with the best + secret ending, I can confidently say that the writing for this game sucks. Like, really sucks. I won't get into spoiler territory, but it's mediocre at best. The only real decent pieces of writing throughout the entire game are some of the companion quests.

The companions themselves are pretty enjoyable. I found most of them charming and distinct enough from one another. Gameplay wise though, there isn't really much the companions offer. Enemies seem to never bother with them and zero onto you. Companions just exist for specific attack combos and don't add much of anything else on that front.

The gameplay itself is competent. It's very fun, but there's not much to do outside of missions. No real enemy presence to just go have fun and beat up with your companions. It's all pretty much relegated to the story and places are linear in their structure.

I know it would be a difficult task to follow up on Inquisition. But this would honestly still be a not-very-good game without living in such an iconic game's shadow.

Overall, a 6/10 experience best summed up with fun to play, fun companions, with mid writing at best and absolutely abysmal writing at worst. Wait for a big sale if you're thinking about getting it.

This game is beautiful. The first game was one of my favorite games ever made, and I had been waiting on this title for a long time and was not disappointed.

If you like psychological horror, hack and slash, and story-rich experiences, please, please, please give Hellblade a try.
