EDIT #1000:

I feel like I have to put this here at the start, because this is the ultimate reason I stopped playing. The community surrounding this game is honestly impossible to describe. The fanboy obsession with this game and the religious cult-like fervor surroung the one-man-dev-god-SpaceJesus is just... WOW. It sounds funny, maybe even a little cool, until you jump on a player server and get completely ♥♥♥♥ on by 5-6 year players for asking a question like "is there a bounty system or kill rewards" or something as simple as "can someone give me some pointers on a good trade route?"

I was told vehemently that if I asked any more questions I would be banned for "spamming" and "being annoying / a dumbass". These topics are barely if at all covered in the tutorial, which I was told to play (I went through some parts twice). I asked each question individual, receiving a simple "no" for the first question and a "are you really just going to spam chat all day" for the second. Not to mention (look at the comments here, pretty much explains it all. The community is either incredibly awesome and chill, or the fedora of all fedora's. Just some food for thought, I had a bad experience trying multiplayer.

Actual game review:

This game is not for everyone. If you like hardcore space-sims with realistic and frustrating flight controls, this is probably for you. If you enjoy the simulation aspect of Elite Dangerous... Well, this is a poor mans elite dangerous. I know I will get flamed for this because the community love for this game is so powerful, but I feel obligated anyways, since the tutorial itself takes long enough to get you past refund territory.

Pretty much all of my questions about the game to other people have resulted in "dude, you must be bad" responses. I have over 100 hours in ED and feel comfortable with space sim flight. The main TL;DR point being: This is not worth $25

I understand this was made and developed by a single guy. That's impressive and a fact to be celebrated.

I'll keep it down to concise-ish points:

If you're looking for a game like X3, that allows building and empire management, this is not the game for you. You can build stations but the function is essentially worthless as far as I've been able to deduce, it just gives you another place to stock up / refuel. The fleet system doesn't fix this either.

Planets and being able to fly around them seemed to be one of the strongest features advertised in the game material. But there is literally zero point in visiting a planet. They offer nothing and are relatively difficult to access especially in relation to just docking at a normal space station.

The game seems to pride itself on a lack of story or overarching theme. In my opinion this is not a feature, and leaves a massive hole in my gameplay experience / makes most things pointless. The game consists of flying around (very slowly), dealing with realistic physics, etc. By comparison, Elite Dangerous' flight performance is much more fun, and I'm not even a huge fan of Elite Dangerous to begin with.

You cannot ascend past a "fighter" class of ships, everything is built modularly on a fighter chassis and you can't progress past that. There are no larger ships that you yourself can fly, or own. Which kind of renders the "trading" feature moot because cargo ships aren't even really cargo ships. To top it all off, fighters feel extremely sluggish and clunky, I understand it's a space simulation but effective dogfighting really just boils down to "strafing" in circles around and enemy. This results in shallow progression at best.

You will die in seconds to just about any enemy. I have 2mil credits and the best ship that my amount of money could buy, a decent mid-range ship following common-sense as well as old Mercenary ship guides. I get my ass handed to me by the first enemy that targets me. This has pretty much pinholed my gameplay into hours of hiding behind allied AI ships and hoping I don't get targetted by the enemy AI. So I'm essentially driving a Ferrari and getting outpaced by 1987 Honda Civic's in a race that pays me $40,000. Half of that will go to refueling and repairing.

The Shipyard system is unique, but I find it unintuitive. It's very confusing, but even after understanding it I still don't like it.

Equipment modules lack diversity. You can use lasers and missile, that's it. After a few hours you've officially seen the full range of diversity offered by Evochron Legacy. Missiles sounds like fun? Too bad, you have to reload and rearm your missiles after every mission, they are a one shot deal. Which sure, it's realistic, but is it fun? Not really. I'd at least prefer a number of charges per missile rack installed. Even 5 would be cool, because currently I shoot 4 missiles and that's that, no more for the entire fight.

Last but not least, this game suffers from a very empty universe. This is a common theme in a lot of Space Sims, but this seems to be one of the worst. I brought this up on the Evochron forums, and was essentially called an idiot, because "there's plenty of stuff out there". Except you get nothing for discovering it. I'm sure at very special coordinates XXXX YYYYY ZZZZZ you'll find a anatomically correct floating rock chiseled into the shape of Gabe Newell's nut-sack, that's awesome man. Enjoy flying for hours and not getting anything out of it.

That's really it, unfortunately I cannot refund the game. I feel like, point blank, the advertisement and text about the game is misleading. Take that how you want.

I remember kickstarting this for $80, still have proof that I did so, and they want to charge me again to get content that I specifically already paid for. They come out with a new expansion, and my $80 + ~$60 purchase price (was really excited about the concept) wasn't enough for them to make it an unpaid DLC? Keep in mind that my playtime over total development is well over 100 hours, almost none of it was even remotely fun.

At least make it a cheaper DLC, not a full price addition. What is wrong with this dev team? The game wasn't even finished in Early Access and was released as a shell of what could've been.

I will personally be paying more attention and follow Uber to see what happens with them, because I never want to play or purchase another game from anyone that had anything to do with this project.

I know what you're thinking, the RTS genre is so rarely developed in today. But do not buy this game.

It's not an awful game, but it's a point blank disappointment. I've been waiting years for this game to have some semblance of what it was originally launched to have. It's not an intensive game, it can't be that hard to develop new content for this.

Another example of the steam audience paying some teams salary while they develop a game. It's like buying a pizza that they let you smell but you can't eat it until it's done cooking. That pizza takes 5 years to cook.

Ive owned this game since it came out almost 2 years ago, and I originally reviewed it as positive. I cannot in good conscience recommend this game anymore to anyone.

This game has (had) huge potential to be a good game. It's voxel based, doesn't focus on graphics, and would be incredibly easy to add content to (presumably).

That being said, I've waited 2 years for major changes to the game and they never came. Workshop content and build sharing is fun, but to be point blank the devs let this game stagnate to the point where it's been outstripped by miles, by too many other survival/builder games. We went over 1 year without an update, 1 year.

As someone who's least two favorite genre's in videogames are Matchmaking combat games, and MOBA's, the combination of both in this game has been fantastic. I think it's the oldschool MechWarrior fan inside of me that really draws me to this game.

Keep in mind that I am playing this game for the first time, AFTER this huge update they just had. Evidently this changes the game quite a bit, some some oldschool fans hate it. So I am specifically reviewing the "new" game.

This game is fantastic, it really is. It's fun, casual, light, but with a component that allows you to be hardcore. It had a lot of room for improvement, but I am really enjoying it.

Pros:
Diverse weapon / bot types, everything feels so different.
There's a definite learning curve. Skill > Luck most of the time
Matchmaking is pretty balanced
CFR is an awesome idea (robot factory for buying/selling designs)
I mean... it's free.
It's just a fun game, I'll stop here because I could go on and on.

Cons:
I do not support microtransaction systems in games that have such appeal to children. It's baiting at it's finest.
No clan system, this game would benefit immensely from expanding on the social aspect of gaming.
Maps are pretty limited considering how long the game has existed.

My only main gripe/con to the game is that it has been around for so long, and has such potential that I'm surprised there isn't more to it. Like I said though, it's a great game, and it's free to try... so why not?

I really tried to give the game a fair shot... realistically this is just another DayZ clone. The entirety of my experience involved running around aimlessly whilst picking up all the garbage I could find hoping it would be useful, and looking for people.

The crafting system is, in my opinion, extremely unintuitive. Sure, it's there, but it's not plausible to partake in said content solo and actually quite difficult to do even with two people... You need to get very specialized tools and hope they even work on a resource to begin. Even while playing on a 2x loot server at my second play-attempt, towns were still ridiculously empty.

Pros:
????
POTENTIAL for very interesting encounters
It's hardcore... I guess? It has its charms as far as challenge goes. It's really not that easy.
http://imgur.com/jf6V2ML - Is this King Henry VIII? 10/10 best game ever. But seriously why the ♥♥♥♥ would someone have a picture frame of King Henry VIII in their home????

Cons:
Most servers are absolute ghost towns, went two hours whilst running from settlement to settlement, didn't see a single soul even with ~25 people on the server. The only guy I ran into today at all was some Chinese dude I gave a pistol and 5 bullets to, who then turned around and tried to kill me with it while simultaneously calling me a "gay lover gay boy". Had to put him down. RIP

Everything is empty, I don't expect to find RPGs and attack choppers laying around but it'd be nice if there was... you know... SOMETHING.

No progression. Therefore not much incentive to play. The only persistence seems to be crafting recipes which I found one of in probably 500 domiciles.

Building system is predicated on specialized tools which I honestly never found. I found a lumberyard and there were no hatchets. Lumberjacks pls.

Textures are meh, very low res. Graphics did not exactly blow me away, considering it runs on CryEngine.

Spend 4 hours staring at bottles of oil until you find a gun or useful equipment and get killed by someone. Like DayZ (salt confirmed)

I could go on and on, but honestly I would not buy this game. One of the few purchases I actually regret going through with, one of the most boring and empty, pointless games I've ever played.

Before I review, I do want to mention, this is essentially a BRAND NEW GAME as the Reborn update has dropped. It's radically different from what the game was, so in my opinion most of the reviews prior to mine are no longer accurate.

I'll keep it short. This is one of the most unique games I've ever played, it's essentially a dedicated-server based online RPG with some slight survival influences, extensive base building, fun sci-fi, and an awesome resource centric progression system. It's very much like starbound in this fact.

Pros:

-You can travel to other planets as you level up, they rotate on a loop about 3 planets per tier so it never seems to get boring.
-Very diverse crafting system
-Persistent vehicle like Dune Buggies, tanks, jets, etc. Prepare yourself for epic endgame battles over territory.
-Territory system! You can conque grids and form mini kingdoms on each individual planet having separate grids.
-Class system - allows you to specialize or diversify, this game is all about choice
-This game is very fun with friends
-Complex PvP and raiding system. Guys can't just show up with pickaxes and raid your base like some survivals
-It's a very playable Alpha game, DEFINITELY worth it for the price
-PvP is balanced, gear is a factor but a dude with a t1 pistol can very realistically challenge a top tier player

Cons:

-This could be a pro or a "meh" depending on your mindset, 3rd person combat system, can make PvP inconsistent
-It's grindy, but a very rewarding a fun grind especially if you're with friends
-Get ready to break your mouse with semi-autos as you crush your LMB! Haha!

Meh:

-Community, this is server-dependent. Noob zone is easily camped, sometimes it is sometimes it isn't. You seem to get the Rust and Ark washouts who couldnt handle a more skill dependent PvP system.

Get the game.

Realistically, if you've played chivalry or L4D, and liked either of them... You'll get some enjoyment out of this game. Alternatively, any fan of the Warhammer Fantasy universe should certainly pick this up.

Deceptively difficult and exciting. My one and only gripe is lack of customization. They may come out with alternative skins but I was surprised to see no information about a Warrior Priest or Priest of Ulric (AKA the obvious choice for a melee character).

It's a petty complaint and it doesnt really matter a whole lot, but adding armors into the loot table and taking a more "diablo" approach to the already RNG dependent loot system would be very cool.

If you gave me the ability to walk amongst my peasants and build stuff minecraft style so as to have more control over buildings and such.... That would be awesome.

Consider adding a priest/holy man class and allow a shrine that gathers faith points when settlers worship at it. And you can spend these points to find tune the stuff being built.

Overall though this is a pretty good game, if somewhat buggy. It's a minecraft RTS essentially. I like it.
