Civilization V is another entry of a unique strategy saga that focuses more on the progress of each country in diverse aspects than just killing each other. Be it culture, science, politics, religion, money, gold, or other elements, the player is free to choose his own playstyle and path to victory.

There are several ways to win the game which makes it more dynamic as the countries interact with each other in diverse ways. For example, you can win without ever entering a war, and acquire your resources by researching innovative technologies, producing new buildings and assets, and upgrading your civilization’s culture. And the scientific progress of each player is also of great importance, because having helicopters against cavalry, or nuclear powerplants instead of workshops is what creates a powerful nation.

The released DLC offer a nice addition to the game as well, with new relevant mechanics like religion, apart from new countries to play with, and the modding community has already created tons of content in the steam workshop to spice up your game.

However, the AI of the game needs some improvement, as they sometimes act in irrational ways, like relationship, trade deals or wars, and they act far different from a real player. There is multiplayer available, so give it a try if you have friends who are also interested. Playing with actual people creates a tactical battlefield where each choice you make is more important than ever, as the other players want to win as much as you do, and they are way more smart and unpredictable than algorithms.

I highly recommend it to all strategy fans, as the Civilization saga offers an incredible experience that can entertain you for a massive amount of hours, with a high replay-ability, including multiple playstyles and countries to choose from.

Be advised, it can be highly addictive to the point where you’ll notice you stayed up far too late when you see the sun rise from your window, and realise that when you said “I’ll finish this wonder and then I’ll go to sleep” you were lying to yourself. Then, after reconsidering your life choices, you’ll do it again several times.
