When I played, “Ori and the Blind Forest,” by Moon Studios, back in 2016, I never thought I was playing a video game. It truly felt like I was experiencing a masterfully crafted work of art, which captured my heart and jerked my tears several times. “Ori and the Will of the Wisps,” releasing on March 11, 2020, embraced the same exact feeling for me, yet improved on what the original brought in so many ways. Graphics don’t often matter for me when I’m playing a game, but Will of the Wisps truly deserves as much praise as possible in this regard. Not only does the game look utterly breathtaking, but there’s never only one thing moving on the screen at once. The environments are ever-changing, always moving to immerse the player with the feeling that everything is living and has its place within the world. A game like this should not be possible using the Unity Game Engine, yet Moon Studios expertly pulls it off. The soundtrack kept on pushing me forward, evoking the feeling of adventure and determination while fitting the environmental storytelling perfectly. Performance was a bit of a drag at times, even with my expensive hardware. There were occasional freezes, lag spikes, and glitches enough to sometimes break the immersion, but never game-changing. Gameplay this time around, is improved massively over the first, employing the original’s responsive, fluid platforming, while providing an in-depth combat system with loads of different play styles to suit anybody. Nothing in the game feels useless, as everything the player finds may change the way a fight rolls out. Abilities found along the adventure constantly open new doors for level design and platforming that had me chaining together jumps, dashes and combat which felt so immersive and satisfying. Level design is, and always has been, the spotlight of the games Ori’s been in. A Metroidvania style map, with challenging, yet rewarding platforming sequences littered throughout, is easily enough to hook anyone playing. A plethora of collectibles and secrets scattered throughout the interconnected world had me occupied and saw me through 26 hours of playtime. There were a few needlessly frustrating platforming parts that had me annoyed, but they are few and far between. The story is an absolutely inspirational piece of artwork. It never gets in the way of somebody trying to experience the video game, but it would feel completely unfulfilling to miss this game’s story. It’s a story of loss and feelings of hopelessness, and never draws the line between good and evil, making each of its characters easy to sympathize with while producing strong emotions from the player. Only held back by its performance, and a few frustrating difficulty spikes, Ori and the Will of the Wisps combines an in-depth combat system, fluid, fast-paced platforming, and an awe inspiring story and visuals so effortlessly to make a superb experience of artwork and gameplay, and feels like an amazing sequel to 2015’s Ori and the Blind Forest. 9/10

As a company, making promises is dangerous. There’s never a certainty that a product will be able to please all of its consumers. Kickstarters are a great way to fund a project while advertising your project to wider audiences. When the game, “Shovel Knight,” appeared as a Kickstarter, it promised to deliver a creative retro, 2d platformer reminiscent of Nintendo’s early days. Since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, Shovel Knight is the first game to truly pay tribute to old games like, “DuckTales,” and, “Ninja Gaiden,” and get it right. Shovel Knight takes aspects of many beloved classic games from the NES era and streamlines its aesthetic and mechanics for a modern audience. With its recent release of the expansion, “Shovel Knight: King of Cards,” Shovel Knight Treasure Trove also solidifies its place as one of the best values in gaming of all time. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove is divided into four campaigns and a multiplayer fighting game. Each of the four campaigns adhere to basic concepts and tests these concepts to new heights, providing exceeding amounts of creativity and fun ideas. “Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope,” is the first of four campaigns and its the one that started a massive flow of creative indie throwbacks. Shovel Knight’s moveset consists of a swipe bound to the X button, a jump bound to the A button, and a pogo when down is pressed while airborne. The creative level layouts test this simple moveset by building on ideas while throwing new ones at the player so none feel like they’ve overstayed their welcome. Each of the four campaigns revolve around a simple concept, taking it to new levels of creativity. Specter Knights campaign, “Specter of Torment,” combines the simplicity of Shovel Knight’s moveset, changing the shovel to a scythe and replacing the pogo with wall jumps, with fast-paced and fluid movement throughout the levels. Plague Knight’s campaign, “Plague of Shadows,” is the most experimental of the four, changing the playstyle to a more movement focused one. King Knight’s campaign, “King of Cards,” offers only a shoulder bash and a jump but again, the levels test the simple concept of the shoulder bash propelling King Knight into the air to new heights. Yacht Club Games had no obligation to include these four meaty campaigns into the single Shovel Knight game, but they did it for free as well as include a fighting game. The amount of effort and foresight in each of the campaigns shows when the games throw new ideas out and build on established ideas. Each of the games use the same art style of reminiscent 8-bit graphics but use modern rendering techniques like having a widescreen resolution and using parallax scrolling to emulate depth between the background and foreground. This compilation of amazing campaigns is priced at $25 USD but holds the quality of any $60 triple-a game. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove is an absolute masterpiece of a videogame and is a perfect love letter to the NES classics. 10/10

I’ve always had an interest in metroidvania games, but never has one really hooked me like Hollow Knight. In case you’re unfamiliar, a metroidvania game is typically classified by being a 2d platforming game where one’s character progressively gets better and stronger to traverse the sprawling and interconnected map. Some of the best games of all time like Nintendo’s “Super Metroid” or Konami’s “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” have lead in innovation for this genre. Hollow Knight takes the mechanics and traits of these games and adds it’s own flavor to the formula. Taking inspiration from the death system of the game, “Dark Souls,” Hollow Knight never feels punishingly difficult. It’s difficulty may drive players away from it’s intricate world, but it also serves as motivation to explore, get better, and gain new abilities. Some of the boss battles can feel daunting and frustrating at times but there is certainly no artificial difficulty present. Usually the bosses close off parts of the map to the player, serving as a reason to keep trying. When bosses are defeated, a feeling of satisfaction is rarely pulled off better in other games. Being able to explore far more than what the player is limited to can feel amazing and overwhelming at times. I always felt like I needed to check every inch of the huge map to the point where I was running around aimlessly. There are loads of secrets and branching paths that create more engagement for the player than there already was. Engagement in this game is just overall great. There was often a part of the map I didn't even know existed until I went there myself and explored. Trying new things and experimenting with ideas is encouraged, especially when the game puts the player in sticky situations where they aren’t left with many options. The combat and movement are extremely tight and precise, making every single move the player pulls off count. Progression is shown in many ways, and is probably Hollow Knight’s greatest strength. Some items are purchasable, while others are found within the world. There are also bosses that grant new abilities. Hollow Knight starts cryptic, only explaining to the player that they are a small warrior, armed with only a nail, on a quest. Looking back on how far one has come after twenty hours of playtime gives the player a real sense of accomplishment. This sense of accomplishment serves as more motivation to see the whole game through. Overall, Hollow Knight has its frustrating moments, but its expert world building, tight gameplay, and the feeling of perseverance make for a great metroidvania experience. 9/10

FromSoftware has crafted possibly the best souls game yet while retaining all of the traits beloved from past games. The graphics are absolutely stunning and I never found any frame rate issues. The loading screens are a tad long but the game also utilizes some great loading techniques that make the world transition seamlessly. I am very pleased to say that dark souls 3 has refined the series formula of amazing combat while making it a bit more accessible to newer players. The leveling system and multitude of items are intricate and nothing in the game feels useless. The game retains its difficulty consistently, pushing the player to try new strategies and approaches. I don't normally play games for their story, and while dark souls 3 doesn't have much as far as a cinematic story, the environment and atmosphere do a wonderful job at immersing and making the player really think about what exactly happened to the world, throughout their journey. The boss battles consistently feel epic however the stakes feel a little lower since all that happens is you lose your souls and you go back to your previous bonfire when you die. The game has a great ending, lots of post game content, and great dlc. Dark souls 3 is immersive, precise, and has everything is needs to keep a player coming back for more. 10/10

Rocket League, first releasing in 2015 to critical success, has remained a fun, chaotic, arcade type game that has held its quality up over the past three years, but falls short in other, smaller ways. The gameplay of Rocket League has largely remained the same: teams of three cars jump and boost, finding whatever way they can to get a ball into the other team’s goal. To put it simply, it’s soccer with cars. Good control is absolutely essential to a game like Rocket League and the polish that the developers and Psyonix have put into controlling the cars feels great. The controls are easy to grasp, but leaves hefty room for improvement and mastery with advanced techniques. There is no form of objective improvement between each game, however, the player’s skill level noticeably improves gradually the more hours they invest. Each match only takes around five minutes, keeping matches from becoming exhausting and uninteresting. Each match feels different, but this isn’t always a good thing. Occasionally I would get put with opponents I have no chance in the world of beating, and sometimes I get put with frustratingly annoying teammates. I’ve also been put in games where I completely annihilate the other team. There is also a wealth of connection problems with Rocket League’s servers. The US-West server isn’t greatly populated and I still have trouble with my ping while my wifi is perfectly fine. Rocket League’s matchmaking just seems to have a hard time finding the right spot for its players. This is where Rocket League’s party system shines. When playing with friends, this game is an experience worth remembering. My friend Jesse and I have poured countless hours, communicating our positioning, working together, and failing which makes Rocket League’s experience so much more worthwhile. Aside from the gameplay, there are loads of cosmetics to keep the player coming back for more. The rocket Pass system is a great way of providing cool items while not pushing microtransactions onto the player. There is also a wealth of user created content to keep the game alive. Behind all of its irritating quirks, Rocket League is a game that has been providing a great experience for four years, and I’m sure I’ll be sticking around for just one more game. Just make sure you play with friends. 8/10

Amid Evil is a great example of what a small team with the right resources can accomplish. The game excels at being a fun, great fps game that is reminiscent of older titles such as Id Software's Quake. There are plenty of secrets to find and things to discover, and the levels are long enough to last you a while. I completed the game in about 11 hours: getting every achievement and finishing the campaign, however; there is a lot of replayability. My one gripe with the game is that it can get frustrating with it's late-game platforming. Also, there are occasional lag-spikes but it runs fine on my expensive hardware. Aside from that, the cherry on top of this great game is that it makes great use of the Unreal Engine and is easily one of the most unique art styles I've seen in a while; it looks amazing at times. This is an exceptionally good game where the effort of the development team shows, and is worth full price. 9/10

Slay the spire brings out the perfect balance of determination, cleverness, and frustration in the player. It is very challenging and one doesn't get better between each run aside from gradual unlockables, however, learning from mistakes and trying new things each run can really build up a player well. the gameplay loop is very addictive and can pay off really nicely in some cases when you reach the top. 9/10 worth full price.

This game is pretty fun and free so I definitely recommend it. Just don’t spend money on it and it’s a great time. One this that draws it back is that it’s not too friendly to new players, but with a little practice anyone can be good at it. 7/10

It's a pretty short game. Being a short game, however, may be it's only drawback as the writing is very thoughtful and funny, and the gameplay is borderline therapeutic. I would definitely recommend unlocking everything there is and getting all the achievements. In summary, it's a very good game with lots of charming qualities but it's length does not warrant it's price. Wait for a sale. Otherwise, this is a great game. 8/10
