Update about a year after initial release:
The development team released several updates since the original release. The features in the free Green Mars DLC in particular are very welcome and are very much a step in the right direction. The terraforming and advanced agriculture part of the game is well thought out and breathes some much needed variety into the game, provided you can power through the early game to get there.

Which brings me back to the main problem with the game: the core base building portion still remains repetitive and fairly uninspiring. The number of basic and manufactured resource is rather small, with very limited interplay between the different production chains. Progressing through the tech tree makes your factories work faster, but that is the limit of advances you can gain from industrial technology. Colonist interaction is similar - colonists are still just numbers, only useful for turning food and water into "research points". Colonists have no other requirements - they seemingly have no needs other than food and drink, and are apparently just as happy living under a dome in the middle of a desolate landscape as they would be living on the shores of a Martian lake surrounded by lush forest.

Overall, I would like to upgrade my original review to a "neutral", primarily in light of the developers' recent efforts to improve the game and in anticipation of future content releases. Unfortunately, Steam does not give me that option and in my opinion this game does not yet warrant a positive recommendation.

Original review follows:

I tried to like it, but in the end, I just wasn't having fun. This game doesn't have the deep tech tree that makes 4X progression fun. It doesn't have the building interactions that make city-builders fun. It doesn't have the feature set that makes logistics games fun. It doesn't have the tradeoffs that make economic simulators fun.

The game goes into the experience of being an AI, but if you want to know what it's like to be an AI, there's plenty of other Sci-Fi out there that deals with the topic without all of the extra baggage.

In terms of the actual building, it mostly comes down to waiting. There isn't really a way to speed up resource collection (you can scan to find more resource patches, but that by itself is a long process that involves only waiting). The tech tree doesn't give you any cool new tech, instead opting for tech that merely gives your buildings +X production, but doesn't really change the overall approach. If you decide to make an outpost base, you'll find yourself repeating the same build over and over, since the resource progression locks you into a fairly rigid order that will have you repeating the same build order every time.

To be honest its not really slow if you manage to get more than 2 hours gameplay.

Surprisringly, it had a game mechanic much like the aged classic found in Settlers 2.

Try that and come back to this title you did be surprise how not slow it can be.

Also instead of asking for more research I actually wish they put more restriction to impede research progress.

And non AI related independent RNG offshoots much like some of the special projects tied to plot and research sites.

Also the plot sequence needs some tidying the pacing desperately needs fixing.

I played the demo some months ago and gave the exact same feedback : there's no fun, no challenge. You just build and wait. I had 0 fun playing this, it's was actually really boring. Also 0 replayability, it's the same thing everytime. Guess they didn't change anything, won't buy that one even tho I really wanted to like it

Thank you for this rare kind of differentiated and factual review. It gave me just the right impression what your expectations were and how good the game was able to satisfy them.
I'm having similiar expectations to a Sci-Fi game with some building/ science/ exploration/ logistics / sandbox features. After your review I'm still not sure if I give it a try using "buy&refund", but from my point of view the game would have done better releasing as an early access.

Kind of a red flag that it didn't go into early access on Steam before 1.0. A little disappointing though, the premise seemed really interesting.

Thanks you saved me from buying this game.

i just finished 20 hours of this game and this review is spot on.
It is trying to be something without giving you the tools for that purpose, in almost every area. it is terrific until you get into the later game and then it all falls apart. Re-playability becomes f you fighting against inherently inefficient systems to try and eke out another year along a very disjointed story arc.
Lots of developer interaction so far, but whats wrong in this game is fundamental, and these are choices that the devs are likely to go back on...so once again we have another failed red planet simulator.

I didn't like Automata, but most people like and it has strong reviews. All these games feature stuff like self upgrading using parts, programs, etc. In Transistor upgrades can shape your approach to something totally different

Helpful review, I gues I'll stick with Surviving Mars then. For games where whole gameplay revolves around idea of player being robot/ ai, Cogmind comes to my mind, but it's indie roguelike. It even has ascii graphics. Duskers is game, where you play as what seems to be last survivor in whole space after some galactical disaster and use drones to scavenge derelicts. You're human, but You can only controll these drones, mostly using written commands, and there's really oldschool schematic view of what's going on. IIRC action of Transistor takes place in virtual reality, but it takes different approach than usual sci-fi. There's Tron 2.0, old game, where You are human mind transfered into virtual world, or Nier Automata, where narration puts strong emphasis on being an android.

I refunded the game based on what I was seeing in hour one and a few reviews like yours, so thanks for that help! I immediately ran into the waiting problem you mention: it wouldn't be something I'd care about it you weren't locked behind building limits. Coming from Factorio where I can build as much as I want limited only by resources and my ability to setup efficient production chains, this came as a huge disappointment.
