This is a game that I keep wanting to come back to!
...except I can't do that without huffs and gruffs about the in-between.

So then shouldn't that be a positive review?

Well, yes and no. If you want a tl;dr for the actual base game/run experience, that being playing enough just to reach what could be qualified as an ending and not for it's post-game, I recommend picking it up for an afternoon of fun and for the possibility of a goof and gaff with a discord stream to friends. Give it a go!

Now if you want to hear a more nuanced description of the game as a rogue-lite experience, or even ignoring the -lite aspect and instead just it's replayability, then here's why I can't recommend this.

Why can't you recommend this?

This game is fantastic on paper and it's a blast just to jump right into. Now with that being said, there are a few issues that I have with the core rotation of the game after you, "complete" this game, or it's "beginning run" that is a staple in most roguelites, that will then open you up to further and further mechanics and/or challenges. One of those issues is innately a flaw with the mode of which you'll be interacting with for the whole length of your experience: the Slot Machine itself.

The Slot Machine

The Slot Machine is a mode that will inevitably become a variable that you have seen the extent of it's depth within a few runs. There aren't many switch-ups with the machine that will keep it interesting enough to interact with without the involvement of vastly transforming, "Lucky Charms" that unfortunately aren't very common and will require a significant amount of time investment to even unlock them in the first place. Yes, it is true that for balancing purposes of the game you cannot frivolously impart these items to the player without the impact of said items losing their grandeur; however this is exactly the issue with the game. After your introductory run with this game, you will have seen most of it's core mechanics, and that mechanic is pressing a button and hoping. Your mode of interaction will eventually boil down to a glorified fidget toy that sometimes says, "You Lose!" or, "You Win!" While it is a video game interpretation, it is still exactly what it says on the tin: a Slot Machine.

Trends of Builds

For this point I'm willing to admit that I'm not an expert of the game yet; moreover I very well could possibly not be making builds as good as they could be. With that being said, *most* of the builds that will find success tend to be skewing a single symbol (In example a Lemon or a Cherry) in your favor of being drawn and subsequently increasing that symbol's value through, "Lucky Charms" or, "Red Telephone" interactions. There are a couple of options that will also work that I'm sure you'll find provided you pick up the game, but most of these methods require very specific combinations of items that bank on showing up alongside each other through the store or other methods. The selections of what build will *consistently* work however will generally be railroaded into the idea of, "Collect all of (Symbol)'s Lucky Charms/Phone Deals". It doesn't particularly feel very good to simply default to the same idea through runs consistently, this will tend to garner the feeling like you're going in a circle trying to repeat a trend to get a result while occasionally looking out for a, "Lucky Charm" combination that can allow you to break into a more interesting build. That nature is exactly what leads to what is, in my opinion, the biggest failing of this game.

Challenges and Replay Options

This section will contain SPOILERS for the game's post-game content. Skip to the next header to avoid.

The post-game content for this game is unlocked after being given the opportunity to collect Memory Paks from generating enough cash to completely fulfill the next quota before actually rolling on the machine. A booster pack of challenges that are LIMITED and only contain THREE cards.

This is fundamentally a gigantic hassle for the convenience of picking up this game for it's rogue-lite content, and is the gigantic nail in the coffin that makes me not want to recommend this game. I do not have an issue with the difficulty of the challenges innately; however what I DO have an issue with is having to gamble for an ATTEMPT at a challenge that I may fail. Further on this note, obviously while doing these challenges you will naturally be pushed to never experiment with the interactions of the challenge and instead sprint for what you know works best to earn the completion state reward of the challenge. It is incredibly disheartening to gain access to a challenge with the idea of what you could make out of it, only to be met with the reality that you could end up getting extremely poor rolls and, "Lucky Charms" in the first few quotas resulting in a loss forcing you to replay normal runs long enough to find the challenge again. Imagine if you were playing, "The Binding of Isaac" and you failed a challenge that you just unlocked only for it to immediately lock and prompt you, "Hey sorry, you don't have anymore attempts for that one. Go beat Mom again for a *chance* of getting this challenge again!" It just feels awful. I believe this is an extremely misled decision.

Ending Remarks and Thoughts

CloverPit really is just so close to something I'd want to recommend to everyone with no qualms but there's so many little things that keep poking and prodding at my sides that make me want to set it down for the day and walk away. Between the effect of, "Lucky Charms" blurring together at the later ends, nature of build validity and viability, as well as the abhorrent third reason (refer to last header) I can't in good faith recommend the game as condition-less as much as I would like to. This is a game you'd pick up on sale a if you have an extra tenner around with a couple hours to burn, then life goes on.

This is the point at which I'd have rated this game as, "Mixed" rather than just a black and white, "Recommended" or, "Not Recommended".

A Dearly Misunderstood and Mistreated Classic

Batoop, or for those with a life; GBO2, is a game that is my favorite in the competitive 5v5 PVP ruleset.

Now despite that, let me tell you why I can't in good faith recommend you to play this while simultaneously also wanting you to play it.
  • Lack of players at anything lower than A-/B+ (The competitive or ranked metric, ranging from D- to S-)
  • Abhorrent net-code/networking
  • Rancid monetization
  • Extremely limited information and utilities for improving at the game without a mentor or friend
  • Poor balancing for modern/high rarity suits

Now, despite all of that, you may notice I still have this game labeled at recommended. Why you may ask? That's because the game is absolutely free and if this game really is a game for you, which it most *CERTAINLY* is not for everyone, then I highly recommend you at least try it out. There's a lot to love about batoop and there's a lot more to be said about being able to play your favorite little guy from various gundam series vs the suit they fought in the shows. If you can find a community of people to play with together then the game is just that much sweeter too.

GBO2 was mistreated for it's PC launch, and even now it still suffers from a lack of improvements to the game and a schedule that is a few months behind it's mother platform on the PlayStation consoles. That being said, it really is worth a few minutes out of your day to see if it's worthy of your attention and/or fixation. Alongside that, if you've got a PS5 (or a PS4 god forbid you want to tread through the dreaded 20 - 30 FPS GBO2) then it's FAR more recommended by me, I've had nothing but positives about the native PS5 release, save for maybe wishing the monetization wasn't rotten.

So what's the TL:DR?

Give it a try, it's free to play after all. If you got a PS5, even moreso. Just be a little patient with it at the start. It gets so good when you get into it.

P.S.
You didn't hear this from me, but between you, me and the fence post... learn to master the Geara Doga. You'll decimate and climb ezpz on 500 queues.

Good Luck, and remember you can cancel your melee swings with boost! Happy hunting!~

A good way to play old Uberhaxornova clips from a WOOL video to your friends who yell at you to turn the damned soundboard down.

Would recommend 9 times out of 7.

Early Access Review
Probably one of the most involved and fun sandbox games I've ever played.

This game.

This game... I mean where do I even start.

An absolute gem of a creation, it nails everything that it set out to create and more. Almost to the point that I would call it more than just a game, it's an experience, a journey, a trip... a work of art.

I personally don't spend time too much on solo video games or experiences, I tend to get wrapped up in competitive team games and anything like that, but this worth it. Even if you don't particularly enjoy solo experiences I *highly* urge you to try it. The characters are created so swell, they're all unique with their own charms and the story is such a fun, colorful, and thoughtful journey that you can tell has been handcrafted with passion.

Simply breathtaking. The devs should be proud of what they've made. This not just a video game, but a window into another world.

TL/DR: A masterpiece, worth every penny and more. I would recommend it to everyone.
