Unfortunately this game is definitely showing its age nowadays, and it's not what I expected as someone going in blind to the Tomb Raider franchise. The incessant amount of combat is over the top for what is billed as an "adventure" and "exploration" game, and that adventure and exploration boils down to an on-rails map and 250 item collect-a-thon.

I can forgive the all-gray colors and washed out textures as being the thing to do in the mid 2010s gaming era, but the shaky camera, poorly scaled UI that goes off the screen, and LOUD main menu along with other poor signs of aging do this no favors in 2024. (why does it need to make so much noise???) The enemy AI is poor, with jittery, nonsensical movement and the damage scaling too: three shotgun shots to the head to kill? Are you serious?
Also, multiplayer-only achievements in a game with an afterthought of a tacked on multiplayer that is now completely dead (because of course it is) is disappointing.

Steam Cloud saving across devices is broken, this game should not be advertised as having cloud support. Developers have done nothing to address this issue throughout multiple patches and hotfixes.
EDIT: Developers took 9 months to fix this simple issue, when nobody is playing anymore instead of during the peak after release. Many issue reports were made on their issue tracker and in the Steam discussions soon after the issue was realized (i.e. January or so) Keeping my review negative because in my eyes these devs have lost the integrity the community deserves.

Pros: Fun side missions, cool fishing minigame, screwing around with buggy Ubisoft physics

Cons: Literally everything else (Story and especially the forced cutscenes, NPC AI, health mechanics and gunplay, Ubisoft launcher, everything else not included in the Pros)

Rating: 2 Fars out of 5 Cry

I decided to play this game during the Halloween season, and it kept me so hooked I managed to finish it in just three play sessions, which is rare for me. It's not a terribly long game, took me 9 hours or so to complete the story along with every achievement, but it's packed full of well-built tension and a lot of absolutely beautiful world, art, and texture design. Not too many real jumpscares, but the psychological horror and lurking dread aspects were outstanding.

The story wove multiple threads throughout the playtime, and some were wrapped up well enough, but others left me with questions about what actually happened. About the ending: The game ends on a cut-to-black cliffhanger, with the last cutscene and a post-credits scene teasing a potential sequel, which I would be willing to play if the story was somewhat tighter and wrapped up some of the elements left ambiguous.

The game ran surprisingly well on an RTX 2070 on high settings all around with DirectX 11, and I tried out DX12 but wouldn't recommend using it unless your specs are higher as it tended to glitch out quite a bit. Even so, there were some strange physics at certain times, owing to the "fixed" (Resident Evil - like) camera and tank controls, and I ran into a couple of death loop bugs, mostly involving the chase/runaway scenes.

Overall score 7/10 for the psychological horror and constantly-on-your-toes feelings, along with the striking visuals, with an interesting enough story that did leave a few things unsaid. Purchased at a discount for around $25, and I would recommend it for that price or lower. Thanks for reading!

I didn't want to have as many hours in this game as I do, but I accidentally fell asleep while playing... or was it an accident? I don't know.
